Why are people getting so worked up I don't think the OP has said anything to indicate they are a bad person/landlord. If I choose to improve my property and the next door neighbour benefits then thats my choice, I am not going to ask them to contribute and definatley would not go ahead and then try and sting them for the bit ajoining their house. Had he contacted the OP and got a refusal previous to having the work done then does anyone really think he would have only done three sides and left the old fence on the fourth side, no he would have done it anyway. he didn't do it for anyones benefit but his own so why he is trying to sting the OP is beyond me. You get an agreement before if you really think that someone should pay towards it so much so that it prevokes verbal abuse. Whats to say the OP even has this money to spare, our fence is not great but our landlord is a gem.

I would give him nothing and advise him if he wants to keep it going he should get the fence taken down and yours put back up.

he doesn't sound like a neighbour worth keeping sweet and now that he has shouted at you as he has I would have thought that time has passed anyway.

Feel no guilt you have done nothing wrong x

In fact I would have asked permission even if I intended on paying for it myself, its just polite to do so.
