As others have said, the neighbour has gone about it the wrong way, it would have been better to view the result and if you weren't happy, don't offer to pay and give him a piece of your mind.

If you were happy with the fence, still give him a piece of your mind, but then be fair and offer him half the cost.
After all he was just trying to improve things and you will benefit from it.

We've all seen the programme neighbours from hell and anyone who has been in an intolerable situation with neighbours will tell you, it's a horrible situa tion to get into.

If you're on good terms with the neighbour try and keep it that way.

Used to have an elderly lady next door, and when her fence blew down in a storm I bought a new panel feeling sorry for her, planning to fit it that weekend. Next thing I knew her son turned up and fitted while I was at work, and demanded payment for his labour, and got quite aggressive, and the sweet old lady was going round telling everyone I was trying to con her. I will never do a similar favour for anyone ever again. Tell him to poke his contribution.

That's terrible. He shouldn't have asked you for anything. Anyway, it was his mother, selfish git, surely he could have done his duty and fixed it for free!

Hope you told him where to go. It was nice of you to buy it though and have the intention!
  • I paid £1,050 along with my neighbour as my share of a 42ft long double skin (facing bricks both sides) wall averaging 4ft high. £800 for a fence is a joke.

Just say a polite 'No' but don't fall out over it. Hopefully your neighbour won't take a fence.

    LOL well done :)
  • you don't owe him anything. if anything he owes you compensation for destroying your fence without permission. however, what has been the manner in which your neighbour has asked for a contribution to the costs of the new fence & how much (monetary) value do you put on being a good neighbour? you need to balance these two out.

He rang me again this morning..now backing down and agreeing to take the £100 i had offered yesterday. Said ive changed my mind as he was so rude and aggressive towards me that am not prepared to pay anything now. I told him i thought it was v-cheeky to do what he did without consulting me first. Am not going to be intimidated by him even if the fencing looks good..its not what i wanted in the first place. He wanted me to go round and have a chat. Am not gunna put myself in that position, because he comes across as a bully. Ive made my tenant aware of the situation also. Just hoping thats the end of it

Let hiope you don't regret it down the line. £100 might seem cheap to keep neighbourly relations alive. Think everyone agrees that it wasn't the right way for him to go about replacing your fence or the way he contacted you but sounds like he realises his mistake. Sometimes its worth grabbing the olive branch.....?

Good for you amjustagirl, how dare he remove your property and have the cheek to ask you for money, what if your garages were joined and he deceided to knock them down and re-build, same thing. What I mean is where does he draw the line.
I wouldn't pay him a penny, he's darned lucky you haven't taken him to court for damages.

Really? Damages over replacing someones admittadly falling down fence with a new one. Sure he's done the wrong thing but taking him to court? :rotfl: Don't make me laugh!
