Fay - last question before I give up for the day.
Does the connector on the end of the cable your using at the iPod headphone socket match the one on the end of your headphones?

Yes, it's identical other than the headphones having a gold jack.

Why can't you download somthing at home and then take it in on a memory stick / CD / split archive and email?
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

Well, as above, memory sticks are disabled.
But it's kind of the principle. If something isn't working as it should, I like to fix it rather than give up and install something I shouldn't have needed.

Any joy on your home PC?

When you get back to your laptop can we just prove that the 'Line in' is actually working, even if it isn't being heard on speaker?

Open Sound Recorder. (Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder).
Go to Edit > Audio Properties > Sound Recording. Ensure your Realtek is selected as the default device and on the 'Volume' button make sure 'Line in' is selected and not muted.
Connect your Ipod to the blue Line in socket. Switch on and play a track with the volume set high.
On Sound Recorder press Record button. Hopefully you will see the equaliser start jumping round. After 10-15 seconds or so press Stop and then Play. If the Line In is working it should play back a recording of whatever track you played on the Ipod.

If not try attaching the Ipod to one of the other (green, pink?) sockets and repeat the record process.

This will hopefully show that your cable and the Line in connection are working.

Now getting it to talk to the speakers is another matter!!!

BTW - I'm reading that the sound quality using the line out-in method is pretty dire on the Ipod (requires attenuation etc). Supposed to be a bit better using the line out from the Ipod dock if you have one.

That is just a stereo cable, if you have a video iPod then it is wired up slightly different.
Take a look at this to see how they differ:

Take a look at these from Apple store -

    Belkin Mini Stereo Cable
'Easily connect your iPod or iPhone to your car or home stereo, portable speakers, or computer sound card. '

Monster iCable for Car (Mini to Mini) for iPod/iPhone
'Listen to all the music on your iPod or iPhone through the mini-jack input on your car stereo. And enjoy higher audio fidelity than with a wireless FM transmitter or tape adapter.'
