Sorry but I'm a bit confused over this. On the set up guide, it says you have to download their programme to set the box up if you do it yourself. How do they supply this prograamme, is it on a CD or do they just give you a link to download it?

They give you a link to download it. I got it to work okay, although never felt quite sure I was doing the right thing. If they set it up for you, you still won't have a clue if you need to make any adjustments later.
Better to set it up yourself if you can, as it will leave you with an understanding of the process.

    Hi All,

Just a quick reminder to 'force your dialers home' to ensure that they pick up the correct time from the orchid servers for the British Summer Time change so that your 'time of day' routing remains correct.

I have checked the manual and can find no reference to the dialers changing on their own so assume that they will need to dial home.

    Happy Easter.

    Mark
Thanks Mark. You have also reminded me to change the Weekday (peak) time to start from 0600 insted of 0800 after BT had changed this.

Same applies if you're a TalkTalk CPS customer with an Orchid.

WARNING! It is NOT easy to programme these damned things.

I've had these wretched phones for over a month now but find it a huge pain trying to programme them and have so far failed.

I know they will do it for me for a couple of quid, but then I won't know how to change the codes when the phone call prices change.

The help line is an 0870 line, which they claim is only so that they can easily re-route it (but you can just as easily re-route an 0845 number).

The manual is called the 'quick' start guide - I hate to think what a slow start guide would be like. It is obviously written, as these things so often are, by someone who understands the phone system in detail, rather than by somwone who undertands the position of an ignorant punter on the street. It is certainly not clear to a schmuck like me.

I'm beginning to wish I hadn't bought the product.

My advice: DO NOT BUY ANY OF THESE PRODUCTS UNTIL THEY MAKE THE MANUAL EASIER TO FOLLOW!

    yours in irked confusion,

    Garret

PS Bad hair day! I mean, what's this 'snootchie bootchie' thing that has started to append itself to my messages? On top of that, although I've been a member of this board for ages my ranking has gone down and stars have been removed! And I've waited in all day for a delivery form B& ruddy Q and they haven't delivered, and the call centre (another wretched 0870 number) has no idea where it is. I hate everybody. :(

Which bit are you struggling with?

Please don't say all of it.

    Everybody's got to start somewhere.

If you post specifics there's lots of folks on here will willingly give their time to help you.

Looks like 18866 and 1899 are still the cheapest for most people.

I managed to sign up for the Tele2 free weekend and evining calls offer and notice that their rate for calls to T-mobile and Virgin, the ones I use most are cheaper than 1899 in the evenings.

I was thinking of getting the Orchid dialer as my kids tend to forget to push the 18866 button at the right time of day. I anyone aware of a list of the numbers after 07 that the different mobile providers use so the dialer can be programmed to route calls to different mobile networks differently. Has anyone using the dialer tried this?

Since calls to mobiles now make up most of my bill, this would seem to be worth the extra effort.

I have sort of found the answer to this in a couple of posts I missed when I scanned the thread earlier. I hadn't thought of the question then, so didn't register the info.

nityejar, in 'the old days' you knew from the first few digits of a mobile's number which network it was on (e.g. 0860 was Cellnet, 0831 was Vodafone). Now, that would help with call cost management.

However, now that it is possible to take your number with you when you change networks, such knowledge may not be as useful as it was.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
