  • Another vote of appreciation here for the Orchid dialler - being a telecoms manager, I'd been sort of looking for something like it for home use for ages and only managed 2 cockups in my setting up of the routing (one that required Orchid's intervention - very swift - thanks to all at Orchid for fixing the problem of my creation, the other that I'd misunderstood the terminology for the same-area-code calls and 'allowed' them instead of marking them as 'Local')

Not bad for someone that spent 12 months not so long ago managing LCR dialling plans for 107 sites worldwide lol
There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't

In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice
  • I bought an orchid dialler and was a bit nervous about programming it, i had a look at the questions sections on the website and thought i could add the following, this is not a slight on garrets post, i think from the sound of things the userguide has changed and the main point (the video section) maybe wasnt available when he bought his.
"HOW TO DECIDE IF YOU WANT AN ORCHID PRODUCT:

The manual is available on line (you don't get a paper copy which is a small frustration in itself for us non-techies) here:" You can print it using the print button in adobe.

"You cannot use the product without referring to the manual. So, for people thinking of buying one of these products:" I found the video section very useful in programming the box and using cw client, found the best way was to open both the video and cw client at the same time and use the pause button whenever i needed to do anything, by working my way through the various sections you can do most of the bits you need to, i dont know much about telecoms but i just copied the bits i needed to and ignored the rest (calls to usa or somewhere)

i would recommend anyone thinking buying one to have a look at his first at least you will know what you will have to do if you buy one. Other than that the dialler is now working fine!!
  • It's a few months after the last post above, so can anybody report on how their Orchid equipment has held up? I'm on the verge of ordering, but would be interested to hear some comments based on recent experience.

I thought of getting the Orchid dialler but I make very few phone calls and decided that it would take ages to get my £15 back in call charges, so I'm going to plump for 18866 for landlines and 1899 for mobiles. I can always decide to go for the dialler later if I change my mind.

I used yellow post-its stuck to the phone, worked for me :rotfl:

Once my year is up with TalkTalk's free evening and w/end calls though I may have to think again unless another offer is on the table then.

Does anyone know if this has a REN value as I'm already up to 4. I guess the other question is does it still have a REN value with the optional power supply.

    Thanks Guys

Edwardnoel - had mine since November, used it on both cable and BT - it has saved me LOADS as no one gets the dialling wrong. Highly recommended, well worth the "hassle" of programming it.

    I've been Money Tipped!
It would probably take me a fair while to recoup the cost of the dialler as it is only myself that uses the phone and I am not a heavy user, only about £2.50 worth of 2p connection calls in the last month or so. BT line rental on basic. Maybe get one for my mam and dad though, I shall see.

Just to add my 2p worth!.......I bought the Orchid dialler in January. I was somewhat daunted by the instructions (just downloaded and printed off) but worked my way slowly through them and all seemed ok.

A later complication came when I switched to tele2 (free national calls evening and w/end - zero cost....but I think that offer has now closed) and at the vital switchover date the Orchid servers went down for a few days (I think to be more accurate, were being upgraded but were still not accessible to alter). Nevertheless Orchid support/customer services were excellent...regularly keeping me informed by e-mail as to what was going on.

While this was going on, I sent Orchid an e-mail describing what I needed my system to do (in terms of programming). In particular, I didn't understand how to program it to dial one specific mobile number using tele2 but just in the mid week evenings (cheaper than 1899 at less than 6p/min)....that particular number had been on Orange but had been transferred to Vodafone. Anyway, Orchid (by return) amended all my settings as necessary (I was pleased to see that most of my original effort was ok!) and all I had to do was force dial my phone to update the settings.

    I use a combination of 18866, 1899, tele2, and BT (for 0845 and 0870)

To date, I have found the Orchid dialler really good (and their customer services/support excellent/helpful) and have recommended it to a number of my friends. My average monthly phone bill (excluding rental) has dropped from around £100/month to £25/month - so well pleased!
