What is the real world ?

Hi there.
Its a long story, I wont go into it & bore you all completly. Last week I mentioned on this forum (not the bankruptcy one) that my company had gone into Administration, I declared myself bankrupt due to personal guarantees I gave to my Company, & lost my family home. I received several replies back saying "welcome to the real world", " oh you poor thing, I can hear the violins now".
Can someone tell me "what is the real world" ? The real world to me at the time was working 60 - 80 hours a week, which I throughly enjoyed, & yes I did have many luxuries, but why not if you can afford it. It was only because the bank suddenly called the debt in, virtually overnight !
I do have a totally different lifestyle now, there are no luxuries, but I am happy with my little lot. Just sometimes it does hurt that all you have worked for has been taken away from you.
These people who keep saying to me "welcome to the real world", what would they do if they won the Lottery, would they give it all away to charity, because its wrong to have a few luxuries, I dont think so !
I was declared bankrupt in December 2008, & I`m looking forward to the future, it can only get brighter hey.
Has anyone else had this thrown at them ?

Hmm regularly unfortunatley......some people here occasionally come across to the BR&living with it forum to express their "feelings" about bankrupts....we're the lowest of the lowWe all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will0

Hi Rictina,
I haven't had any of this thrown at me because I don't venture onto the other boards because they do tend to be judgmental, I am afraid.
That is why I like this board so much, it really is for help and support and the regular posters and fermi keep any eye on things to make sure it stays that way.
Every so often a troll appears with a few vindictive posters but they tend to get flushed away!

its not just here though....i've had various insults thrown at me from former freinds & collegues about my bankruptcy & i've been discharged 2yrs tomorrow
I always think though...those that are first to hurl the insults have much deeper darker debt secrets than we've EVER hadWe all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will0 -

Absolutely agree with you there.... a lot of people who appear to "have it all" actually have very little at all.

I am confused by the statement you made, i am not judging but just asking a question as i have had nothing ever to do with br.
You said you did have luxuries because you coulld afford it but in reality you couldnt afford it because you were in debt. Do you understand why i am confused.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Rictina - I'm in a similar situation and determined to keep hold of my home - I know there will be much negotiation in the weeks & months ahead. Sometimes these things happen. I can't imagine there are all that many people who set out with an aim of becoming BR, but occasionally there are very few options left. I guess that is the point that most of us have reached.
Like with most things, the important thing is to recognise when there is a problem and do something about it!
I have told quite a number of people and received nothing but kind words and overwhelming support, so much so that my missus was in tears on Saturday after many friends offered help.“I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.”

Does this mean that in your eyes anyone that takes out credit.... i.e incurs a debt "can't afford it"?
Peoples circumstances change and while one day they may be able to afford their lifestyle this may not be the case when things out of their control change, which is why a lot of us become BR.

I am also confused as to why you are looking at Bankruptcy threads, if you have had nothing to do with bankruptcy ever before ?
As many will tell you, most companies borrow money, it enables them to move forward in business & helps the company grow. I had a house building company, & if a great land opportunity came up, I had to grab it. I wont go into the profit of the company, but I didnt even have a mortgage on my own house & lost it ,because of personal guarantees.
Hope it answers your question, & gives you an understanding, as this unfortunatly is happening to a lot of famillies.
Regards.

Thanks for that, & you are absolutly correct in what you say. You have lifted my spirits.
