I seen these in Sainsburys do i need to soak these before using in my slow cooker? i want to make a chicken veg and mixed pulses soup if anyone has a recipe link that would be great
Sainsbury's Country Soup Mixture 500g0 -
Hello - I think this is the one that you have to soak before using. If you look on the back of the bag it should say if pre soaking is required.
They also do one with pasta/vegetables soup mix which doesn`t need to be soaked.
Recipe wise if I am making chicken/veg/mixed pulse soup - I just tend to throw in whatever I have to hand, plus one or two vegetable stock cubes.
I find that onions, carrots, leeks, celery make a good base.
Good luck - let us know how you get on.0 -
If the slow cooker is going to be on for 8 hours I dont pre soak but the soup mix is only just cooked this way so would recommend soaking if you remember to (unlike me that just decides to chuck some in at the last minute lol),The best bargains are priceless!!!!!!!!!! :T :T :T0

I'm not too keen on the mixed soup pulses/grains, as sometimes they can be a bit gloopy. I prefer to use beans, usually cannelini, or similar.0

I've never been able to get to grips with soup mixes
The lentils cook quickly and turn to mush, while the peas are still like bullets :rotfl:I prefer to add separate items at a time to suit thier speed of cooking
As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread to give you more ideas.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
I've just bought a 500g packet of Soup and Broth Mix from Tesco. At 59p it's a bargain.
Pearl Barley (55%), Yellow Split Peas, Green Split Peas, Marrowfat Peas, Red Split Lentils.

Time: 45 minutes
Instructions: Soak 1 part soup and broth mix in 5 parts of cold water, for 8-12 hours or overnight. Drain and rinse. Bring 5 parts water to the boil, add 1 part soaked soup and broth mix. Boil for 10 minutes then simmer for 35 minutes. Drain, rinse thoroughly and use as required.
Can this mix be used in stews as well?0 -

Hi all
I have bought some broth/soup mix (lentils, barley etc). I need to use them, I want to use them but not sure what I am doing with them. Do I just use them as is in water and boil them, do I add stock? Can I add pasta and veg to make a minestrone soup? Could I add them to stews etc?
Advice/recipes much appreciated.
Thank youLucylema x :j0 -
I usually add them to stews.
