If you were to stock up for 6 months, what would you buy?

  • Tomato puree? Sainsburys do this at a good price. I have to say I rarely bother buying passata - if I want a smooth tomato sauce I would blitz a can of plum tomatoes and add a squish of puree to that. I seem to remember that Lidl do cartons of passata at a reasonable price though.

You mentioned Makro before - last time I was in I found some good bargains on Loo rolls (I think it was 18 roll packs of Triple Velvet at £6.79 - BOGOF) and I also stocked up on Poppadums - miles cheaper than the 99p for 10 that Tesco want for the Sharwoods or Pataks ones).

One thing I would say - you mention not using pre-made sauces etc, but you have the Asda SP curry sauces on your list - are you looking to buy these because you think they are something you'd use and enjoy, or because others have told you how god they are in their opinion? Sorry - bit of devils advocate there!

One final thing - if the Orkneys are anything like the Hebrides - remember to fill whichever vehicle you take over up with fuel before getting back on the boat! :D

I know what you mean - I will get a couple to try them to see - if its about 14p a jar/tin? and its OK then it might be ok for emergency fodder material - or you never know we might enjoy it?? So yeah added it cos folks here say its a good thing to have in the store cupboard.

Petrol - good point - its still hovering just about £1/ltr here some places more some less the least I have seen it for is 99p at the mo.

Makro - yeah folks say is good for loo roll, bi carb, washing powder and things like that - guess the best thing to say is to not get sucked into buying lots extra 'bargains' that I don't need. That will be a tough one.

I had wondered about the tom puree thing as its cheaper than even tins of tomatoes - lidl last night here had passatta at 40ishp for a 500ml packet. I have to say though everything is creeping up in price isnt it? Tins tomatoes now abuot 35p - they use to be half that didn't they?/

Jelly - thanks for that they do like jelly and will look at seeing if I can find a homebargains.

And come the revolution I am hoping that I will be ok - I think its why I like snow days - gives me a chance to feel all glowy about the provisions we have for our emergency rations:rotfl:

Will have to revise my list later.

I have put 20 loo rolls in the loo roll drawer (12th march) in the bathroom and will see how many we actually use - I reckon its a roll a day but I have no real idea.

Working out how much stuff you actually use is a bit hard I have to say - I hadn't realised I don't really have any proper idea of what we use in a week or a month:confused:

    soy sauce?
  • Hi Furndire and Chalkysoil
Hey good points - I guess you can get big soy sauces at chinese supermarkets.

Pepper yeah thanks good point need to look at the spice drawer and see what if anything is needed.

We only use a posh salt (we don't use much normally for anything - eggs, rice and potatoes) but I will see if I can get a box of that somewhere - the Maldon crumbly one.

One of our few indulgences :)

barbecue sauce - it makes most things taste better. Unless of course you know how to make your own.;)

I'd head to Poundland for all the soaps, plaster, pg test kits plasters and little craft kits for keeping the kids occupied on rainy days.

Then I'd go to M&S and buy some nice pants, life isn't worth living without good old MandS pants to wear.:D
Then Boots to top up on skin creams / hair dye etc. that you can't get at home.

Next would be the supermarket for pet food and tins, dried pasta etc.. It sounds like you can access most things over there.

I'd buy a winemaking kit too, easier to transport than lots of bottles of wine.

I almost got to Orkney last year, going to try again this summer. We got as far as the black isle then this thick fog came down and I thought waste of time goin to see Orkeny in peasoup fog, so we went to Ullapool instead. :)
  • ailuro2 vbmenu_register("postmenu_19723527", true); - good points - we have a wee boots but no M and S

mardatha vbmenu_register("postmenu_19727215", true); - there is alot of fog in the summer if it gets warm ironically the summer mists come in. Orkney and shetland aren't (sometimes) very expensive to fly too from Edi - takes about 1hour 10 to here and about 2 to shetland. Or the Aberdeen boat isnt' too bad either - its really worth a look its gorgeous and steeped in history.

List being revised and trying to monitor (loo rolls, squash consumption and sugar - stuff like that)

How many folk actually 'know' how much stuff they use?? I thought I did until I had to try and quantify it!!

    All help v much appreciated!!

So if you had an empty car - (its quite spacious and work are paying - hurrah)

If work was paying I would take a bigger vehicle LOL
