I have a purpose built store cupboard with about 8 months supply of necessities which I rotate. Just the fact that I have peace of mind with my supply in todays economic climate is rewarding knowing that if my husband lost his job or there was an illness there is extra food there to help. You never know what is round the corner and it is good to be prepared even tohelp others out.
  • You're making me jealous talking about island life. We were in Orkney for the first time in August (stayed in Kirkwall) and absolutely loved it. In the process of booking again for August (coming up for the County Show and the Vintage Rally). Bringing a car to see the island. Sorry can't help much with your shopping list as you seem to have it pretty well covered.
    If I had known then what I know now . . .

Me too HL... I like empty places without trees (hate trees ! ) so I always wanted to see the islands, esp Shetland because it's like the end of the world. Everybody else wants to go to majorca and I want to go to shetland...:D:D

  • one of the best shops i have found is home bargains . they sell brand names and toiletries at really cheap prices. i always go there to stock up on plasters and savlon and suchlike. quite often some of the foodstuffs only have a few months on the shelf life so you will have to check this out but i find it to be a brill place to get all sorts.

Tomato puree? Sainsburys do this at a good price. I have to say I rarely bother buying passata - if I want a smooth tomato sauce I would blitz a can of plum tomatoes and add a squish of puree to that. I seem to remember that Lidl do cartons of passata at a reasonable price though.

You mentioned Makro before - last time I was in I found some good bargains on Loo rolls (I think it was 18 roll packs of Triple Velvet at £6.79 - BOGOF) and I also stocked up on Poppadums - miles cheaper than the 99p for 10 that Tesco want for the Sharwoods or Pataks ones).

One thing I would say - you mention not using pre-made sauces etc, but you have the Asda SP curry sauces on your list - are you looking to buy these because you think they are something you'd use and enjoy, or because others have told you how god they are in their opinion? Sorry - bit of devils advocate there!

One final thing - if the Orkneys are anything like the Hebrides - remember to fill whichever vehicle you take over up with fuel before getting back on the boat! :D
