  • You have it pretty much covered but what about Fabric softener, Greaseproof paper, Sandwich/ Freezer bags, Cling film, Soda crystals, Brillo Pads/Scourers, Toilet Cleaner, Toothbrushes, Cough Syrup, Bonjela, Antiseptic( Savlon, Germolene etc), and Baby Wipes(Good for all sorts of little cleaning jobs)
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Where are you going Fay ? Aberdeen ? Because if it was Edinburgh ( by some miracle LOL ) then you could try Costco with my card.

*waves* Helllooooooo Fay! Well done on your forward planning. Why don't you go through the list item by item working out what you are actually likely to be able to save money on and what is likely to be available where you are at the same price - better to buy loads of the stuff where the big savings are to be had than all sorts of different items some of which mjight not give you that great a saving. Sounds like poor Darwin's suspension will be groaning on the way back anyway! I agree with vinegar / bicarb & stardrops. Plus MF cloths - look for a Poundland for those as the packs of 4 they do are excellent. I've actually got a pack to take to our holiday cottage with us this year - how sad is that!

If you're likely to be near a Sainsburys then their basics range is excellent and I don't think you have one on your Island do you? The basics tinned chopped toms are lots better than Tesco Value ones - same with tuna, better than Tesco. If you find yourself near an indian supermarket then their bags of spices etc are superb value, likewise you can get big sacks of rice for less than you'd pay in Tesco.

One thing though - don't get sucked into the trap of buying things you actually don't need - it's easily done! ;)

  • :eek:HI all

Just put the whole lot through a supermarket comparison site OMG £269.58:eek:

I keep reminding myself this is for 6 months but even still.:eek::eek:

    Hi essexhebridean xx

Yeah forward planning who would have thought it.:D

Cant decide between darwin and the citreon - darwin heavy on petrol - citroen bit smaller but easier on petrol will have a think cos we are also going biking/camping as well so will have 2 dogs tents and a couple bikes in car as well ho hum x

will need think hard as can save some on chinese supermarkets etc and shopping between smartprice/value/sainsbugs nice BASICS range stuff.

Horrified at price though - but do keep thinking six months then only fruit veg and meat :)

Thanks so much for all the advice so far
    xxxxx

    ps I should have added I don't iron:D
    I dont buy puddings:o
    Or alcohol :o
I dont do prepackaged much except crisps:rolleyes:
We dont tumble dry so we do use fabric softener
I am ashamed to say we do have a dishwasher but I work full time and have two lodgers bless and a part-time living with us brother (who is allergic to washing up)
We dont tend to get sick - so far - i guess its the dirt :):D
We dont buy meat unless its from here, given or very reduced and I have two hens for eggs - bless them :) I love my chookies ( I get free hen food from work)
We have a cat for catching mice and a couple dogs for catching sticks

And yeah going via Aberdeen - staying in Edinburgh for a week - then heading north via Inverness then thurso.

Prob do about 500-800 miles altogether - not much really considering.
Life up here is fun but prices do have their drawbacks but trying to make the most of things when down.

So potentially a budget of £ gulp - £300 is probably pretty realistic?? Six months - all toiletries, staples and household things nothing fresh - seems so outrageous. xx

    Costco card mucho appreciated :)

  • You seem to have it all pretty much covered.
Do you need a supply of cheap batteries for anything? What are the simple luxuries that you pay a fortune for in local shops? If we lived on an island then I think my DS would leave home unless he had a six month supply of peanut butter, not a staple but his favourite and expensive locally (we live in a village) :D

ETA basic painkillers, plasters etc, all expensive if bought locally. You may need to visit several places if stocking up as there's a limit on how many painkillers you can buy in one shop.

Well if you don't mind the fact that you can't ever have a 'nice hairstyle', sensible shoes are usually needed, umberellas are useless and most big stores don't deliver to you (and there's no fast food chains) then islands are great.

Happy to keep note and see what I actually spend - I am never this organised!:rotfl:
