I started with just a few plants & took cuttings.
I've never tried growing lavender from seed.
Something in the back of the brain is saying I've heard it's not easy to do.
I've sown lavender from seed too. I recall the seeds were very expensive - about 16 seeds in a packet, but they all took and grew well.

I love lavender hedges but have a horrible feeeling that our clay soil will mean they're a no no - am I right?

They have done ok for me and my family on clay, and in they do rather well on Mediterranean clay! I think so long as they are not water logged, you might need to improve drainage of the soil, it's ok.

The thing with me and lavender is remembering to cut it back. I forget or cannot bring myself too when it should be done and get leggy plants.:o

Well, lavender, like many herbs from the Med. likes free draining spots in sunshine.
I don't have much clay here so I have no experience of growing lavender on it, sorry.
My lavender hedge is around a large raised bed which suits it well.
We changed all the plants 2 seasons ago. They were getting old & woody so changing is necessary every few years.
The new plants have all reformed into their line & were 2-3ft tall when in flower

I hope we can grow it. I love the look of lavender and the fact that it smells gorgeous too - heaven!

:D I am always surprised when people detest the smell of lavender. It's gorgeous, clean and warm.

How can anyone detest the smell of lavender. It reminds me of being pregnant as I used to use lavender oil to help me sleep. Works really well to relax you.

I know, it amazes me too. That said, I struggle with a lot of things other people like...elderflower and lilies stink of pee to me...a vase of lilies while beautiful smells as enticing as a cat litter tray:o

    Oh, today's weather folks?

Here the frost stayed on the south side of the enclosed farmyard, and anywhere shaded. The troughs retained a thin ice all day too. Beautiful though. I got a great pic of the peacock, but now I am mac I cannot work out how to share pics

LIR, try joining Flickr and upload your photos there. Once uploaded it's pretty easy to send them to bulletin boards like this is. Forget what the free bit is on Flickr as I pay for the Pro stuff, must be due again soon I usually pay 2 years at a time.

Thanks. I just checked that out but I have issues of the technophobe type with anything that requires a yahoo account. For example, I am member of a yahoo group I can't get off becAuse I can't log into the wretch. If I try and rejoin it tells me I am a member but won't give me details:o:rotfl:
