    Itsme/Lir/Rozee,

its not a standard cruet set, the shaker at the back has mahoosive holes, like a shaker for sugar or even talc. The little dish on the right could be for cream? whipped or face? The thing with the hole on the left, no lid, for cotton wool/jam.

I'm going with a Dorset jam/cream/sugar set for accompanying scones. Rare as hens teeth, y'know ;)

    I've been Money Tipped!
I feel a little more secure about taking on new critters as of today. Reading about egg profits I'm thinking I should get some super laying hybrids.....I love my pure breds and my own hybrids, but I,ve had more eggs when we had two hens. I'm going to do a swap with a friend who keeps another rare breed, but I need to think about high egg production birds too. And finding a shed for the geese to live in so my chickens have no excuse not to lay at home.

Re organic/free range, does it impact on gate sale price? After all, we're not allowed to advertise them as such (I believe even when we are soil association certified I can't sell the eggs at the gate as 'organic' unles I actually have a retail unit rather than normal gate sales?

It would be an unusual breakfast set - cream, jam & sugar. I've never seen one with a sugar sifter & not a bowl.
It's hard to judge size. What's the diameter of the bowl, rhiw?

If the stand was the other way up like a tray I might be tempted to think it was some sort of dressing table set.

Hehe, it is hard to tell the scale...
  • I used to keep rare breeds and I loved them but over the past 4 or 5 years I've decided that I need to actually make a small income from my birds rather than them be a financial drain on me. I was also renowned for going to auctions and picking up waifs & strays. Caused many problems (and illnesses), this way I know my stock and their health much better.

Every spring I now get a new batch of POL layers, as they lay straight through their first winter. I tag the older girls and take them all through the summer together, then come late autumn (when the older hens are now 18 months old and starting to slow down the laying) I take them out as and when we need them for the pot.

I've also separated my Muscovy ducks and hens LIR, much more hygenic now for the hens, as those ducks are messy!

My land/birds aren't organic so not sure about that, they are free range and fed GM free food but I have regular customers now and my honesty box is actually down our our private lane so is only for my neighbours (and postman!) to use.

One of my jobs is in the city and I charge them £1.20 a box (rather than £1) and they are all really happy with that. There is actually a waiting list with people asking me to get more hens!

I like the strategy. I'm still unsure how ggod I am going to be at killing animals I've lived with. My rational self says it's better than buying them dead from a source where I don't know how they've been raised (in all likelihood, worse than I will), my irrational self struggles with the idea of killing something for my own convenience. I was veggie/vegan for 15 years and am very on the fence about the whole meat eating issue, and full of contradiction in my practice!

Sorry for not reAding everyone's posts - I have a weird thing - my balllance has gone, it's horrid. managed tolist a lot on ebay despite glitches onthe site that drove me mental - took all weekend. I nearly fall over when I stand up...No I haven't been drinking.
fanny! Willow out on the feeder tree, but still torrential rain. There's been land slides & School kiddies from Loch Carron are having to go either 140 mile diversion or by train to school.

It's blooming mild though....and still getting gales too..........
