    I don't even know what a plantain looks like - aren't they a Jamaican banana? :o

    :D

Our commonest one is Rat's tail plantain - it grows in lawns and has the 'microphone' type spikes coming out of them!

Rozee, a nice project to do, especially with the kids as the tewins get a bit older and start learning plants, is a square metre of field, or a couple of them, and I'd all the different grasses and wildflowers. Hedgerow safaris are fun too, if you are minded you can out humane traps out and see what little rodents you have abou too. :)

We have a little dip in the field that leads to the source of the spring. It looks like an ideal place for a little wildlife area. I'm slightly sheepish to admit that I went onto the field for the first time last week as it always looked to wet before and I wasn't wearing the right shoes :o

Can I post a pic here? I'll try.

  • Just changed up the coins from my egg sales, I've made £15.80 already this month. I'm really quite pleased with that. Obviously we have out eggs free and I give the parents a dozen a week too as it's their land. I've 14 hens at present and besides a honesty box outside I sell to both my places of work too.

I'm keeping it all in a separate pot this year to pay for chook feed and be clear at the end of each month just how much profit I'm making.

I'm already finding this thread really useful as it's making me 'MSE' my farming and be clear about my goals for the year ahead. Thank you all!

PS how much do you all buy/sell your eggs for? And does anyone sell duck eggs? If so, how much do you charge for them? My hen eggs are £1 for 6.

I don't know if this helps Janie as I buy from the market lady at the moment and I don't know where she gets them from but she sells a full tray of small ish ones for £4 and medium ones for £5. Then I also buy her double yokers as my son loves them (although they're not always double - about 50+% I'd say) for about £1.25 per half dozen. The locals seem to sell their chooks eggs for about £1 a half dozen from their gate. I'll have a proper look next time I'm passing.

I sell mine for £1.20 a half dozen, but they are organic and free-range. Having looked at the price in our weekly market I could possibly get away with more. Like you, I keep the money in a separate pot and the hens are "cost-neutral" now. This time of year, of course, they slow down a bit but I should still break even I think.
