Just got a quick question, if I get some raspberry canes am I too late to plant them? I've got gaps in mine and need to fill in.

No, this is a perfectly good time to plant. Literally dozens of packs in my local large garden centre this week. :)

Now I have a huge ask Ladies and Gentlemen. Please will you tell me when you are all starting to plant your seeds etc as I ended up soooooo far behind you all last year and never really caught up :(

As the man in the building society said, "It doesn't work like that!" :p

.....but I get what you mean.

Some things that should be planted by now include seeds that need to be frozen, though at this rate they won't be. That's my hawthorns and eucalyptus.:D

Some other things need a long season or a quick kick-off, so maybe I will do some of those at the end of next month. e.g. early tomatoes.
But I never plant the whole of an early sowing in one go, because very often, the slightly later ones do best.

At this time of year light levels are poo, so apart from cut & come again lettuce, land cress and similar stuff, I give planting a miss. :)

A quick bout in the freezer can do wonders, Dave. It's the same principle as used for sloes when making sloe gin. They should be picked after they have 'frosted' but, if the frosts are late, a day in the freezer works just as well.

It also depends on your local growing season. We can be a good month behind those at low-level.

Apropo farming, I was given this for Christmas http://www.anton-coaker.co.uk/index.html

Dave may know his writing from the Western Mail?

Not a small-holder (Duchy tenant right up on Dartmoor) but some interesting comments on things like SFP, DEFRA (or whoever they are now) and EID, as well as a few fantasy pieces like the first one on a rather fiesty loaned bull going amok.

Funny sometimes but some reality checks for dreamers.

Can we have some links please, RAS? I'm a total newbie to this having just bought something with about 4 acres. It's very heavy clay soil.
