Plus, with the sell off this precious way into farming and also, crucially with support, into a farming community, is diminishing as an option for new young farmers.
True, I hear that some counties have sold all their tenant farms off.
It's not just councils, though. Around here the NT seems to like to rent out the farmhouses for maximum rent & then, separately, let the grass to local farmers. At least they can reunite the property with it's land as a working farm at some time in its' future, I suppose. The fact that it can never be a family-owned property again grates with me, though.0 -

Many years ago we tried to get a farm tenancy, had many attempts and came second a few times but no prizes for second place. The amount of capital needed was enormous. Still miss the buzz of doing 3 year business plans and that was before excel!!

our ex council farm was massive in its georgian hayday, infact, I had to double check everything because depsite the house being relatively humble for a farmhouse, the farm was huge, and the original farm yard would have been bigger than on those monster arable farms....I still can't quite believe it. the council turned the house into five, and split the farm way back, and when they sold it split it again. they are b88888 to buy from and deal with too.
its funny, the historical size of farms, because of course, the big family farms got big by aquisition, farms were so much smaller than what we think of as a normal sized family farm...0 -

Welcome Lucielle.
We just have a big garden (well for Liverpool, which seems to specialize in tiny gardens
) but we seem to be almost self sufficient in garlic. :rotfl: :j So not even a smallholder let alone a farmer. But we're trying to grow what we can. Last year didn't get much in other than garlic and potatoes (oh, and Kale come autumn that we're still enjoying very much) as house was being half demolished and then extended. Moved in summertime, but didn't get spring planting done, so no tomatoes or other stuff, not even beans!
Big winds last night, the poplar tree at the bottom of the garden (on University Halls of Residence Land) looks to have a broken huge branch that is leaning on the sycamore next to it. OH has reported it to Uni, their estate office is shut till 3 Jan, but it's been logged and they will ask their security patrols to keep an eye on it in the meantime. Meanwhile sitting at kitchen door listening to wind there's a lot of creaking and the odd groan and cracky noise coming from down there.
Seen 2 foxes cross the garden tonight. First I think was the old fox, he sauntered. Second was much oranger in colour and I could see the white on the tip of his tail, I think one of the 2 cubs our neighbour watched playing on her garden in the spring. He ran much faster.0 -
