well, thats the shortest day over.....weirdly it stayed light till VERY late here....well after half four....when dh got home we could still see perfectly. Couldn't see the sky for greyness but, light grey at least!
from here on in it gets a little easier for light each day.....but anyone else wondering if winter is gonna jump up and bite us just as all next years blossom is set? this mild wet is, house heating problem aside, the WORST weather for me....,makes everything muddy and hard work and damaging to the ground.0 -

The chicken man was very genuine and I'm sure he wouldn't mind anyone seeing his set-up; he invites enquiries etc on his web site. He reckons to kill about 50 chickens of his own each time, so not vast numbers.
Winter's bound to arrive at some point, but not for a while in the south, if the long range forecasts are to be believed. I was down at the chicken pen tonight, locking-up in my shirt sleeves!
Yes, the ground has never looked worse. Friends who moved to a new smallholding in very early November looked very dejected about it, but I suppose they'd not been back to see what their old land was like.0 -

Alfie, I'm sure you've given much, much more than you've received on this thread.
I always enjoy your posts and the glimpses they give into your 'unusual' life, down there in feudal Hampshire!
Edit: That's what's so good about this thread. While many entries may seem no more than a bit of chit-chat, the picture of people's varied lives builds up over time and we find that everyone has difficulties to battle with, as well as the triumphs. The variety of environments & circumstances is wide, but we could still do with a few more contributors, particularly from areas unrepresented e.g. dry parts like Essex, people gardening on the shore line, or on chalk etc.0 -
£2.50 is very reasonable Dave as it seems to take ages to pluck a cokerel. He may have a plucker?
Agree with others about getting your own animal/meat back - always an issue.
Once got a skin back that had a hole in - like a bullet hole? Weird.............
It's been hissing it down all day. Went and opeend the bottom field gate so sheepers can have a rummage down there - the top field is water-logged unsurprisngly. Went with a pot of jam & card down to lovely lady who has a croft - she's 94 & such a laugh & still drives although she insists she can't see a bl00dy thing!
Just had a big plate of pudding & am pigged out watching goggle box......0 -
Davesnave, you're right on every count. I tend to keep quiet on animal husbandry cos I know so little about it. OTOH, sorting out Micawber like problems is no hassle at all.
We've all got a different approach to self sufficiency/smallholding and different ways of living the dream.
And financing it0 -

We do seem to be mainly on the west, don't we? I wonder why?
Depressingly wet & muddy underfoot around here, too.
@alfie - It's been short but a total pleasure...... apart from the bl**dy spider :rotfl: Maybe one day when we're over your way you can introduce us to Mabel
