Choille, they were part of quite a large auction lot of ethnographic carvings, all of which appear to be genuine, though vintage rather than antique. Several African items, Rotorua koruru, Sarawak shield and dragon, Thai suar wood buddha, Hawaiin tiki as well as the three posted. I have shown some to a leading museum who haven't raised a fake alarm. I'm not discounting they might be more modern and mass produced but it seems pretty unlikely. The fish boy, Melikertes (?) cheers Itsmehonest, has had an old repair (broken in two and glued back together).

On our Streetview you can even tell that I havent washed my car for ages :o

Lir, the only objection I have to holly is that when it does shed its leaves, they stay prickly enough to be a nuisance to the gardener.

Been down to the beach with the gks picking driftwood. Sunny, then 20 minutes later sea mist and heavy drizzle. Lots of dog walkers, lots of dog poo as well :(

holly will be road side of our drive. might want to put something more interesting than grass on the newly created verge, but no other ''gardening'' as such, so ideal for prickly things. :)

Hollies can be quite slowgrowing, LIR.
There are alternatives like berberis (I think) - the one with the thorns & little round white or pink berries. We've got a few & they get given a very wide berth :D

but they grow tall eventually and will blend visually well with the yew on other side of gate way in front of the house and garden, thep clip well and don't need clipping often and, unlike most things I like, aren't brash!
  • Sorry, I obviously misunderstood. :o
From your post about the teens I thought you wanted a human deterrent & was meaning you may have to wait a few years (or buy specimen plants) to get a fast-working "Off my patch, ya little ***" effect :D

well, would be ideal to have that impact immeadiately, but can't have everything. Thedrive is,atm, like a huge layby, open to the road and some distance to the side of the house.....so we get a lot of pull ins. I think the mere ''!!!!ing on the boundary'' of putting ANY thing in might do a substantial amount of the ''problem''. I'll put a post in either end of the row with reflective strips on I guess, to protect my baby hollies

You are very polite in your neck of the woods, LIR. Around here we use girt great boulders :rotfl:

On the street art front. We aren't allowed to do such things so people find other ways to amuse each other :D
    Beside a popular walk
Not the exact sign but the same wording as on a local gift shop
