Yes, but one of our economies has been dropping the medical insurance. Now I'm paying the full ogling price, she isn't quite so attractive! :(;)

NHS dentist that we use is fine, though not female, nor eyecandy, with a currently open list.

Got back from our 3 day break, cut short to one night only as couldnt get right sort of food at hotel and really didnt need or want any stress at all atm.

Took blacktail to vet on Tues as she was increasingly listless and out of condition. Too far gone and we agreed to end it there and then, likely diagnosis was an old egg bound condition with complications. We'd seen sour crop and got her over that, put nose ring on dominant hen when she was pecked and treated her for lice and mites, to no avail. Feeling guilty we should have done more and got vet in earlier :(

So just the two hens left, both in good nick, though one moulting.

I'm having a sort through hens atm. I really want another RIR or two. I'm trying to decide what to do about roosters. We have one left bred this year...hybrid. He's handsome, but....not what I want for breeding. Meanwhile, my cream legbar is looking a bit ropey now. He's had some foot problems this summer, and while I don't think they are genetic....e.g. he didn't have them before this summer...in fact, I think he might have broken a toe....I am aware he's going to need replacing soon. I can't decide whether to go back to cochin, to consider an arucana cockeral or whether to go for a more prolific egg laying breed ...because our egg situation isn't what I've grown accustomed to...they are becoming rare and precious commodities atm!

One can't always work out what's wrong with hens, like the one I culled earlier in the year, and the other apparently healthy one that just keeled over. Then there was the Australorp I was sure would die, so I cursed myself for 'leaving it to nature' rather than bump her off.....and she's absolutely fine now. :)

We're also very egg-short atm. On Saturday we're going to look at some RIRs near Okehampton, but at only 16 weeks old they might not kick into lay until spring.

We call our hen with the nose ring, 'Punk,' although she has a floppy comb, rather than a spiky one. :D

I haven't got a timer on the light out there with the birds, so I'm going to have to start getting up super early at the clock change to turn lights on for eggs soon. I wish it were timed, it would be much nicer to not have to do that. But needs must.

OMG, just have made some sort of modern art with the electric fencing. All my neighbours are going to titter tomorrow when they see the mess I've made with it! My fencing has been the subject of some amusement, with my funny new grazing system, but its been brilliant. Now though, releasing more grass is trickier. I'm going to have to take the whole lot down and re do it now, but hopefully when its not raining.:)
