Well I've taxed the car and bought some stuff to take on the bracken next, so that's this month's housekeeping blown......:D
Actually we haven't much bracken, but it's been creeping in from the hedgerow, so I want to stop its progress. Apart from that, on the field areas, the weed killing ought to be much less in the future.
We have one hen feather pecking again - at least we assume it's one - so the immediate removal of the most pecked bird was called for. This meant making a decent run for our isolation cage, usually used to break broody birds and minus a run. As we have a placid broody hen too, we stuck her in there for company.
Meanwhile, careful obsevation of the flock showed no evidence of any pecking, yet a good number of birds have been 'grazed.' When we find out which hen it is (and there is a suspect) she will be off to Hatherleigh Market!
The Aus tralorps have made excellent progress and are now being quite silly, chasing & challenging each other in mock battles. They seem to be inseparable and are rarely more than a foot apart. Exactly two weeks ago today, one of them was at death's door....0 -
I'm still reading, although sometimes you lot are so prolific it takes me ages to catch up with you all!
Yesterday morning I noticed one of the chickens looked decidedly off colour. She couldn't stand or walk and kept falling onto her front. She ignored the food I out in front of her and didn't attempt to use the feeder or drinker. After bringing her indoors and asking DS3 if he remembered the 'chicken school' instructions for dispatching hens, we decided to put her in a box and observe the patient for a few hours.
DS3 duly noted that her droppings smelt alcoholic, then the penny dropped! The previous day DH had strained the pineapple from his home-made wine and not disposed of it well enough. Cordelia had managed to find it and so yesterday awoke still very drunk.
She recovered during the day and even produced a beautiful egg, but DH has been told to ensure his winemaking fruit dregs must be disposed of in a responsible manner. :rotfl:Making magic with fabricLight travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.0 -

oh how funny! We could do with those here before the boys are culled. I give mine bread and cheap rum for their last meal.0 -
Oh my goodness the rain. Last year our hay would have been in yesterday or the day before, so it would have been raining to day last year (IYSWIM) too. But not like this!
Horses have come in to have hay tonight and dry off. Feels like autumn.0
