talking of eggs...my lot have been kept in thier enclosure for the last two weeks to deter fox problem and iv not had ONE egg ?????? pompous lot have gone on strike !!
LIR.. your chooklets are growing into beauties !!
in between clearing iv done 3 washing machine loads, went out and in dry ! also made tea for all comers. iv just gotin and sat down... oh and i fitted in cleaning out thoroughly the stable but didnt get to do all chook houses.... [sack me !]

Alfie, I've read that foxes have infinite patience and will come by every day for years just on the off chance, so not sure that'll work.0

No fox involved, but last night one of the Welsummers was stone dead behind the chicken house at 9pm.:( She'd appeared fine right through the day, there wasn't a mark on her and her weight/appearance was good. Any ideas?
Other than that, our eggs are coming along steadily, though with birds moulting they are down a bit. We also have the 'medicated' hen out of production too, so it looks like supply will not be meeting demand again.0 -
Davesnave, its worth remembering for your own records. AFAIK we kno longer have to report unexplained deaths, but its good to be organised about record keeping anyway. Also, for the record, I don't eat anything if I don't know how it died. You know, just in case!
Its really sad, you get to know and care for them.
Lucky man with eggs. I'm threatening mine with more buy ins. If I had tie to get to a poultry sale.Makes me cross. I could have sold eggs most of winter, even just a haf dozen a day, but now I'm siting here grateful if I get two

No, we won't eat her. Might freeze her (well wrapped) until we know others aren't affected by anything. Yes, DW keeps copious notes, though not always useful ones IMO! :rotfl:0 -
turned out to be a nice warm day today.....
I am hooked on Britains got Talent:eek: but i am miffed at the amount of kids going through to the final......
Wish i could just be brave enough and just get rid of the tv.... hubby and the kids would dis-own me, and then i would spend more time on the ol puter....:rotfl:
Davesnave are you going to re arrect the old greenhouse?
Edit.... glad your friend like her gift.....Work to live= not live to work0 -

in my house the radio is on all most of the time, and when it isn't the tv is. I feel ''bad''about this, but I like the noise. I love, love, love the radio but I'm increasingly aware that while receiving so much input I cease to create any output of worth myself! I need to switch off.
No eggs again. We're going to ''enrich'' their dairy and keep them in for the whole weekend.Poor wee beasties.
They look good, but if this fails it will be a ''proper'' worm, as opposed to verm x.
And I found rose buds being attacked to day and greenfly in the garden . Not sure I want to be organic any more!0 -

The old cedar greenhouse cost us £150 second hand 22 years ago. We refurbished it then, but now it's on its last legs. I might be able to salvage some of it for cold frames or something.
Not sure about Verm X myself. I understand all animal medicines will shortly have to prove their efficacy, and I wonder how it will fare then? We've used it a lot, but our chicken-expert vet uses Flubenvet, so we are switching to that now. No egg withdrawal required.
Greenfly are easy enough to kill in an organically-approved way with soft soap based sprays.0 -

If you leave them you'll probably find that one day they're all gone, courtesy of hoverfly larvae. Its gruesome to see them making their way up the stem hoovering up the aphids!
Been adopting a change is as good as a rest routine and with no babysitting/college run duties this week we've been getting out and bargain hunting. Caerphilly yesterday, mid Wales today.
Gets us away from the building works either side of us as well!0 -
Hi Rhiwfield..
wondering why you have been a bit quiet lately...
It is nice sometimes just to get out and about, and go to diff places,, to see diff things...
must be difficult if you got building work going on, on both sides of you...
looks as though its going to be a 'scorchio' day today here...
dont know what we have planned for the weekend... but i def need to spend some time in the garden.. even if its just having a bbq and drinking a crabbies or two:DWork to live= not live to work0
