Oh I've just spent way too long reading through this thread hehehe Can I please join in :) I move to my new plot in a couple of weeks. we bought a derelict farm at auction 2 yrs ago, adn after a yr haggling with planning , then 8 months waiting to sell here, we are finally ready to go. We've demolished the original house, and have builders on site in 2 weeks to start building our new home :) It's exciting and scary in equal measures, well more scary at the mo lol

We have a couple of acres of land, some of which is going to be garden, some plot for veggies and big lump a paddock for my dogs :) i have a little bit of woodland, and a burn that runs the length of my site,, with a little waterfall, and a pond half way down it. I';m a complete novice, so will probably hound you with what sounds like stupid questions, I appologise profusely in advance :)

I thought you had animals? You must be used to things like that?

No animals atm. Used to have in my former life (tho left the OH to sort out), but am hoping to get some in my next life ;)

I can cope with most things, it's slugs and snails that make me feel queasy, and frogs & toads (hopping slugs), & a strange dislike of tortoises (crawling slugs)! Am game for anything else tho :D

Welcome. You sound about a year further on than me and DH :)

We can't do all the building in one go, so stage one is stabilising one end of the building, getting the bones of a kitchen in, turning what is the kitchen now into a study (and getting rid of the crack that at the top the cats could get through ) and downstairs loo/and utilities. HEATING, hopefully!

I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to an outdoor tap. :o

Welcome kazchow, your plot sounds idyllic. A couple of us here are doing/about to do major building stuff, though in my case I don't know what, just yet. :o

Market report: There wasn't one for our friend. Apparently, because it's half term, all the cages had been filled by kids selling their chickens, rabbits guinea pigs and w.h.y, so it was full by 8.15! There was even a guy outside giving his geese away to anyone who'd take them. For everyone up at a civilised time, it was a case of, 'Can you come back next week?':(

DW was able to cast a much more learned eye over the poultry this year. She reported that not everything was as described, nor were all healthy; scaly leg being quite prevalent.

Back here, the road outside was in a right state again, as the crows had attacked the rubbish sacks for the third week running, tearing out anything that had contained food. Then, when the bin men had called & removed what was still in the bags, some twonker's unsecured recycling sent newspapers down the road too.:(

A couple of us picked up. I did the bit of road alongside our land and filled a large carrier bag to overflowing. Some of it had blown well over 100m..... Amongst the rubbish I retrieved, was a very snotty letter from a bank to one of my neighbours, but of course I couldn't possibly bring myself to read it.......;)

How can you hate frogs and toads? Eat loads of insects - fewer midges (I seem to be becoming sensitised to midge bites I hate the b****rs. Must find where I put the Skin So Soft and actually begin using it when I go to the garden! Not to mention the flies and moths as well. OK, some moths are nice, but there's plenty that aint. Thinking codling moths and their ilk.

I can really relate to it being both exciting and scary! We didn't actually demolish the whole house (just the extension and garage) but it might have been easier to do... other than we're in a semi. Most of the original build has gone though, including all of the concrete floors on the ground floor (google concrete sickness to see why). There's very little left of the original house, and what is left is hopefully OK - we're just hoping we've got rid of enuff of the carp. ;)

Suggest you take a look at the First Time House Renovation thread. It's very long, will take an age to read through, but some useful contributions and info there. My contributions prob aren't particularly useful (though lots of pics which I hope are, to give a flavour of what it's like to do a major renovation), but most other folks have lots of helpful suggestions. Plus great DIY-ers who are a mine of information. :j :) :j

We bought a bog standard semi in need of a load of work, it has a decent sized garden though (quite hard to find in our area) - as much as we can manage (actually prob more than we can manage in future years, but if we get on top of the weeds now it might be feasible!).

Just so you can get a flavour of demolition and rebuild...

Oh, and for Dave (who followed our trying to buy a house stuff a couple of years ago), I took a video driving up to the house yesterday on our way home from DD1's wedding. I'll try and take some vids of the garden (and inside the house) over the next few days if have the necessary energy. Today is a day in bed to get over all the travelling to and from wedding.
