We have an electric fence, so no worries there, but we also have one of the local licenced deer shooters living next door to our land, so we now have some expert help!
Apparently, no big problem with rabbits either. Wonder why!!;)
lots of venison and rabbit for the winter stews then!!!
Just got back from a walk round RHS rosemoor and the kids loved it, they want to go back tomorrow...... I [STRIKE]want[/STRIKE] NEED the kitchen garden they have there, the fruit, veg etc etc......
any heres to dreaming!
Mamburysealed pot challange #572!Garden fund - £0!!:D£0/£10k0 -
weather is lovely here today.... so havent long come home from work, so do i spend some time in the garden ? ( the weeds have come from nowhere..lol..) OR do i get a few things for listing on ebay today?
but before i do anything i am going to have some lovely fresh eggs poarched and served on toast:D.......Work to live= not live to work0 -
should we? If we borrow £35,000 we can start to live the dream. We are in our late 40's .20 years £230 a month. Low waged though, but I dont do paid work.
What is it you'd be buying, if you don't mind me asking?
Borrowing for a house is something many of us used to do, almost without thinking, but now the security of jobs, rather than people's exact income, seems most important. Interest rates are currently very tempting, but how long will that last? These are the sort of questions you have to weigh up.
No one can really advise, I fear. Personally, with my money nearly all in 'money' at the start of this year, I felt comfortable enough to sit and wait, but as the year wore on I began to think that it was a bit vulnerable like that, even though I believed (and still do) that house prices have a way to fall yet. Everyone has a different attitude to risk and feelings have a lot to answer for in big purchase decisions!;)
Mambury, I agree about Rosemoor's veggie garden; far better than anything I could aspire to.:o0 -
Afternoon all. Well I am very pleased with myself today!! We had our tea last night and after the oven was switched off, in went a tray of freshly picked and washed sage leaves. And they dried a treat, so off into a freshly sterilised jar they went, and I am well chuffed with myself!!!
Big plans for next year for all my herbs to be treated in the same way. Will keep some for fresh usage but we had a glut of parsley this year and I could have dried it all and put it in jars for use over the winter!
But I now know better and will definitely be doing that next year. And here was I going to waste money buying a dehydrator!!!
Lots of herbs can be very successfully frozen Bonsi - chop them and pack them into an ice cube tray with just enough water. The when you need them you can just chuck an ice cube into your stock or stew.:T0 -
ooh thanks jawuk for that, was not sure about that. sounds like the other glut of sage will be washed and frozen, along with a load of rosemary too!
the weather has been lovely today so hubby was out doing the front garden, he's tackling the jungle out back tomorrow so fingers crossed that the weather stays nice!! we have a guy coming from the council to see what they can do to help us get the garden sorted, as they are the ones who messed it up in the first place!! and hopefully i will get a proper washing line!!! they left us with one rusty pole which is useless so the guy suggested a whirlygig like the one my mum's neighbour has. he has the kind that you can lower to put the washing on then crank it up for the airing! would be perfect for my back and take up less space in the garden! but we now have the 2 sheds and the kids summerhouse so its starting to take some shape. just got to see if we can get some bricks off freecycle to build a wall in the front to replace a rotten fence!
Now that hubby is not working, i'm trying to find as many jobs as possible for him to do to keep him busy and away from the tv!!!!LBM - August 2008 - Debts then - £33390 - 2nd LBM - November 2009 - Debts then - £18500:mad:

Well good evening to you all. I thought I would send you all a big ((((Hug)))) as its Friday!!! (Okay and to bump the thread up!!!)
Hope you are all having good weather. It's been carp here today, rain rain and more bloomin rain. At least the front got cut yesterday, so himself has to do the back really soon as the council guy came today and said that as soon as its cut, he will send his men in to take away my one rusty washing pole and give me a nice new whirlygig!!! And he will get them to lay a nice pathway to it for me as well. What a nice man he is! Turns out he knows my dad so that might go some way to getting us what we ask for!! Can't get a new kitchen as the one thats in the house was installed just before we moved in as the previous tenants ruined the last one! And the same with the bathroom. Apparently they trashed the place big style!!! But with my disability, we are going to look into council grants so that we can go to a local company and get a kitchen and bathroom that I can use without causing myself perpetual pain! Also going to get the doc to refer me for an OT visit so that they can confirm what it is I need i the house.
But enough about that!! My green cone is to be sited this weekend (weather permitting of course). As I only have one of my daleks in use at the moment, the green cone is going to be sited right in the middle of them so that the nutrients that go into the soil will seep into the compost and hopefully make it much richer and better!!! Well thats my hope anyway.
Still not heard about the proposed allotments (grrrr and I'm first on the list for one too!!!!). The local newsletter said if anyone was interested to contact a certain person and luckily I was the first person to contact her!!! So fingers crossed they sort them out soon, as we can use the winter months to clear it and get it ready for spring planting!! If we get one, I'm going to buy another 2 daleks under my dad's details and put them on the lottie!
OH is off on his hols next friday (peace and quiet lol) so I might just get my mum in to help me shift some stuff when he is away and cant moan about whats getting binned lolol.
Hope you are all well, hugs to you all xxxxxLBM - August 2008 - Debts then - £33390 - 2nd LBM - November 2009 - Debts then - £18500:mad:

Thanks, CTC....it's been a very long time coming, but I suppose I'm living proof that, even if the wait is many years, there's a place out there for everyone.
For me, this place is a bit of a compromise, but for other family members it works much better than what I had in mind, so overall it should work very well. I think that is the key; compromise. The money for a full smallholding might not ever be possible for many, but a place with a very big garden or a separate field & barn close to home might do the trick. I know I could manage on an acre, easy, if I had to, and that would give me more immediate control, but it is nice to be able to do the 'luxury' things too, like plant trees.
I hope you are soon over the bug that's dragging you down at the moment. I'm having a day off today too, sitting in the office updating our contact details with all the banks, companies etc we deal with......and yawning! We do the big furniture move on Wednesday/Thursday, but we've been up & down the M5 more times than I can remember in the last week, and still there's half our stock sitting here. It's no good when half your watering is 100 miles away!:eek:0 -

lol.... i bet you know every inch of that M5 now....
to be honest i have been so busy lately phsically and mentally etc with work with one thing or another, and when we went to the Bulldog Bash.. it was a great stress relief weekend, even though we were partying all weekend... i think it all caught up on me, as the bug caught me at a low ebb, been sneezing all day....
Manged to put on DVD on Amazon ( as its alot quicker to list than ebay) and its only been on there 1 hour and its sold:j so thats another few quid into the savings fund...
Also decided to sell some of my favourite 'good life' books too, i have read them umpteen times.. th best one is 'Fat of the Land' by mr guru himself john seymour. its how he started off...
one good thing about selling stuff on Amazon, they dont charge you until it sells... plus before you click the submit button you know exactly how much you will get paid if the book sellsWork to live= not live to work0 -
Evening all I haven't been on here for ages so trying to catch up with all your newsy posts!
We have been in-undated with courgettes lately, o/h announced a further seven (more like marrows) were in the boot of the car earlier
Made tons of courgette soup last weekend, recipe said it freezers well so make double or triple, I made quadruples of the stuff and it ain't that nice! Quite watery, stuck some potatoes in to thicken it up but it still resembles the colour of dish water. ho hum. will do in the winter I guess to warm our tums.
We're not currently looking for a house or anything at the mo as can't afford to, but o/h still regularly checks out rural scene. Are there any other property websites you can recommend?
I guess there are probably loads of properties on right move etc but you can't seem to search for houses with land unless I am missing something?0
