re quinces, has anyone ever had japonica jelly? When I had japonicas I didn't know you could do anything with them....now I'm thinking I need another japonica just for jelly. I saw some for sale at Bath and West show, in the honey tent I think, but I can't remember whether I tasted any or not...0

Phew sounds as if you have all been busy and productive, I still have a small heap of fruit bushes to plant and 30 strawberry roots came this morning! Had a family day today that really didn't work out but at least I got lots of exercise!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Although they might have been I suppose. Dave might know.
Don't think they are. Quince (the Cydonia one) is used for pears. I'm no fruit expert, though!
Our quince (Cydonia) got some sort of disease last year, maybe caused by stress in the dry conditions, so DW has pruned it hard into a decent basic shape. I looked at it, but decided I couldn't tackle that without making a complete hash of it.:o
We're still working on our 80' beech hedge, having cleared the trench of weeds and lined both sides with heavy duty plastic, then dug in the pig manure and wood ash. We just have to sift more soil in now to fill it, removing all the couch grass, nettles etc as we go!
I know that, ideally, we'd have prepped the area first for a season, but with some things you just need to get on with it, especially when its stuff like privacy hedging. It works both ways and we need to be fair to the neighbours.0 -

It's because of what's growing either side of it. On the neighbour's side things aren't too bad as it's lawn with a bit of couch and some nettle, (also a grass that grows from bulbils?) but on our side, under the spoil from the trench, are far more nasties. We will sort them, but knowing how things go, it'll take time because of other stuff. I intend to let the weeds come up first, then put a protection board up against the new hedge and spray them, following with a dig a month or two later.
The whole septic tank area will be a desert for a year or so, judging by the way we've needed to tackle other areas. Thank God we're not strictly organic, but in the end there's still no substitute for hard digging!
Whoops, almost forgot, I've started a new photo blog thing for this year. It's pretty obvious which one it is:

You have the wrong person; it's DW who project-manages. I am the labourer!0
