Ok my thoughts are now turning to my greenhouse and how I want to organise it. When we moved in at first I foolishly got rid of the staging thinking I wouldn't need it :o. I kept one bit but it is in a sorry state and I want to get it sorted this year.

    Now I have 2 options:

    One
An L shaped staging area leaving one long side free for grow bags. My one concern with this is the overlap at the corner.

    Two
Staging along both long sides leaving the end free for grow bags.

In practice it will be using it to bring seedlings on not really for growing things to maturity apart from a couple of grow bags for toms and cucumbers.

Now my next question is do you think a two or three level staging area would be better?

Sorry to keep asking you all so many questions :o but I am very indecisive and none of my friends have any interest in gardening at all

We went for a third option. The time for protected sowing and growing on seedlings is largely complete by early summer. So in the GH we use 2 very sturdy growhouses (bought 4 years back from B&Q on offer, think B&Q only sell the flimsy ones now). These have 3 mesh steel levels and are great for germinating and early growing on. Keeping cover on plus extra tarp if a cold night gives them 3 levels of frost protection. As they are on casters (gh has brick floor) they can be moved around. As plants grow I'll use the remaining floor space until its time to plant most out in the garden. Then the plants what are left and the growhouses are moved outside allowing all GH to be used for toms etc from late May thru to end Oct.

I do virtually the same, I have a plastic growhouse frame which I break into two and place a long black tray on top of each (keep them away from most slugs).
Then I grow my seedlings on that. But tbh I do bring them in on cold nights, as I don't want to risk it.
BUT! The wind broke my frame a week or two ago, so I'm going to be improvising or using duct tape this year :)
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
  • I have heard another rumour that it is Asda coming by us...and it should be open by the autumn:o

We have got a few kites around by us now.... what an amazing bird to watch...truely majestic in the air..

I feel soooo guilty you lot have started with your seeds and clearing, and getting your gardens ready... my garden hasnt looked so bad.... It has been used as a dumping ground this winter:cool:

Depending on what the weather is like this weekend, i might make a start...I just havent got the energy or the 'umf' to start it this year...

*** make note to self, STOP DWELLING ON WHAT IS HAPPENING AROUND ME, AND GET ON WITH IT...LOL..****

CTC, don't feel bad. Its meant to be a joy not just a chore.

re asda, one is going up near here, they started last month I think, and the shell is almost finished. Its happened at a great pace. The bad is that it will be there, the good is that once built its over with the dust and disruption.

Well I made the decision about the T&M vouchers and as always ended up spending more than I should have done. I bought strawberries, blueberries and a half price soft fruit collection. These are the things that we eat that cost the most. I am very excited about them coming!

I just went onto my clubcard page and didnt realise i had £68 odd to use:T I dont buy in tescos if i can help it, try to spend my money in local or independant shops, the points went back to 2009:rotfl:good job i went to have a nose as they were ending in a few weeks, I have ordered 3 lots of £20 E-Vouchers to start with, so i have £60 to spend in T&M:beer:

Might even use the rest of clubcard points to get more E-vouchers, is there a use by date on the E-vouchers?

edit.. just had my e-vouchers through, valid until the end of may, but i can only use 1 e-voucher per order..(poo)

Poundland has some terrific buys in plants: fruit bushes, rhubarb, roses & bulbs.
Morissons are doing onion sets & seed potatoes.
Bitter wind here - we had snow on Sunday but not lying - only the Mountains bright white. Haven't managed to sell any cockerels so will have a cull this week - they are so gorgeous that it does seem a shame but............

Urgh, been digging and digging the muck heap today. weirdly its a job I really like, just, I'm not as strong as I used to be and its so unstable underfoot ATM. The chickens were all in there, and I reminded them what happened to Strawberry when she got stuck in quagmire poop, but they ignored me, of course. Speaking of strawberry, I saw her emerge furtively from the hay barn this morning and look cross that I saw her and found a clutch of 14 eggs....meanwhile I've got a broody hybrid.

Alfie, do you still want chickens....do they have to be pure breeds, or would some hybrids do?
  • Was hoping the weather forecast would be wrong (it wasn't), so rain lashing against the window again! It must end soon.

Picked up some of the Morrisons onion sets and also some rhubarb - red champagne for £1 each, so potted those up as I can't dig anywhere at the moment.

Will have to try to get into Aldi to see what fruit they have on offer next week when I'm in local town which is the only place they have a store near me.

Just hoping the rain stops soon.

I'm reminding myself all the time it was a dry autumn and we'll be grateful for tis is we have another dry summer. :) I still have this water to empty, under contract and no where to put it yet, so I'm getting rather edgy now!

I'm after crabapples I can set in hedges, anyone know if any of the cheap places have any crabs? Or anything else I can put in the hedgerows for hedgerow bounty?:D
