In the absence of a chain saw, (I was promised one to borrow at the w/e) I have been doing all the jobs on the exhumed stumps that would be done by hand anyway, like cutting off the roots. I also got a bit carried away, so produced some firewood using the hand saw, but there are some stumps that are just too large.
Just remember that the last thing you want to do, is get dirt anywhere near a chainsaw blade. It dulls it almost instantly.
So I wouldn't chop up a tree roots with a chainsaw, been there done that and had a dull chain afterwards :o

I suppose a hire chainsaw would be ok, but I think it's difficult to hire a chainsaw without certificates.

You know that's useful. We've got four giant stumps up (4 out of the sixty, the rest are going to be there a long, long while I think).

I suppose when you think about it, soil is basically bits of ground up rock, so when you cut a tree stump with soil on it, you are partly cutting up bits of rock. Not a good idea :D

Yes, that's why I said I would have been doing that bit by hand. TBH until I get the safety kit I'm not keen to use a chain saw anyway.

I'll burn the thick rooty bits on a bonfire later....much later, when they are dry. Did that with the last lot after 6 months or so.

I think on reflection, dh might get to keep his stumps (all grown together). He wants to put them somewhere to look at...but no way of moving them ATM :(

OMG this weather! Yesterday so beautiful and today sloppy, wet, windy and generally gross.

The birds have really taken to our cheap bird feeder. Its RIGHT outside the window of what is our kitchen and will in the future be DH's study and he's going to have a hard time working with the birds there. What started out as timid and polite birds taking food gently is at times now full on bird war bickering over whose peanuts/seeds/coconut/mealworms and fat it is.

Tell him he's got you to look at. :)

Guess you're stumped for a solution then. :p

Bird politeness varies by species. Greenfinches seem to be quite aggressive and sparrows fight a lot, whereas blue tits are generally more patient and, at our place, often attended by robins who pick up what they drop. You may find it settles down to a routine over time, when this bounty becomes a regular thing.

Brighter showery weather heading almost your way, but unfortunately, not exactly your way, or I could get that bonfire going. :(

I'm spending a lot of time looking up birds and not finding them on RSPB bird finder atm. For the first time since moving here we are seeing some tits. Upuntil now, its many been pigeons (the trees we took out sheltered dozens, dozens, maybe hundreds.), starlings and corvids and the odd wren and the wag tails, and the Birds of prey. But I got the best view I've ever had of a kestral last week....literally six-8 feet away, at about 4-5 feet high, so I could see all down his back and tipped wings. :j:j

I never saw the amazing bird I saw before the hard weather hit. I think it must have been an aviary escapee.

Yesterday was lashing with rain and there was no chance to go outside, so today I think I will pop out and get another few pots filled with new compost and if I am feeling brave I might get the bean bed cleared and some trenches dug as my canes arrived yesterday and my thoughts are turning to getting the beds sorted now that the pots are nearly finished.

I also have a huge pile of wood to move, we had collected it for a project that we then decided against so it is going to a new home in the next few days. Now all I have to do is drag myself off the warm comfortable couch and convince myself that going out into the chilly weather is a good idea!
