Davesnave, hadnt heard of either Howards Lancer or Brandy Wine before, not in my Fruit Expert either.

Put in Hinnonmaki Green and Invicta last year, to add to the two Whitesmiths. Makes picking a real challenge!

Didnt give my blueberries (Herbert, Bluecrop, Berkely) any winter protection, will have to see whether we got lucky.

53 times less to build a pyramid

It would mean that the jumbo jet from Los Angeles to Cairo is approximately one million workdays of hard physical labor.

According to Wikipedia , the Egyptologists in terms of labor need for Cheops pyramid and come to the conclusion that it would take an average of 14 567 men who worked for 10 years, resulting in 53 million workdays.
Now, I'm not an accredited scientist, I'm pretty sure that that's 53 times more to build a pyramid.

It's a beautiful day here, I went out with my DD yesterday and it was horrible, wet, very windy and cold, yet today feels like a different season.

My various different berries are starting to bud up, I like the look of your Brandywine Dave, looks very interesting.

My blueberries didn't have any protection either, their 2nd winter, it will be interesting for me to see how they get on also.

Vile yesterday here too....today feels a little colder, I'll check the new outdoor themometre later, but very clear and pretty.....I've turned the new pump on and the horses are all naked again. :D
  • Thanks Rhiweld! The compost bin on the plot has not rotted down wonderfully, so I will add some of the stuff from the top of that to the trench. And perhaps try to get some useful liquid there too.

Although, DH had obviously forgotten "the plan" as when I got home last night, the first bag had been tipped into the compost in the garden! Oh well, there are 2 more under my desk at work - hehehe!

I also DID get to the plot yesterday and finally harvested Christmas dinner. (The weather prevented it beforehand, then we were on the annual lockout, and damp weather and DH working mad hours meant I couldn't get there the past couple of weekends). Only 1 brussels plant had survived (most hadn't even gotten going but there was 1 other the last time I was there), but I got a nice load for this week and there's another week or 2 left on the top of that stalk. I dug all the parsnips, and 4 short rows actually gave me a supermarket bag FULL. I shared some with my gran and another aunt too. I pulled 4 leeks as well, to use this week - the rest are growing slowly, so should have them for at least another 2-3 months.

And the rest of the brassicas hadn't really survived. There are a few sprouts of purple sprouting broc, but left those for next week. And we took home 2 heads of red cabbage - gone beyond eating, but DD wants to try an experiment she saw on tv using the red cabbage water as an acid/alkaline indicator with ordinary vinegar and bicarb of soda from the kitchen.

The herb beds got badly hit too - one rosemary bush is dead and the other is barely hanging on. The margoram is shook, and I'll have to sow a lot more this year. As well as starting parsley again, and a lot of coriander and sage and thyme.

Sorted my seeds as well, and now have the plan for the plot and the garden drawn up. Lots and lots of peas, french/broad/borlotti beans, lettuces, tomatoes, courgettes. A lot less brassicas than last year (had too many cabbages). And am debating onion levels - one pack of red and one pack of yellow sets may be too much as they seem to rot off in storage too quickly.

I hope to get started on sowing over the next few nights as DH is away and won't give out about me "not sitting down and relaxing" once dinner is over and tidy up done. :) Tis relaxing to me, he just doesn't believe it!

I'd have chosen Unas rather than Cheops anyhow :D

So was Twiggy, and it didn't seem to do her any harm! :)

If they are toms, peppers etc expect to plant them deeper as you !!!!! them out. And don't be too kind to them. Mine are in the conservatory with the door open ATM.

Bloomin' wind won't quite go around to the right quarter. It's a great day for a bonfire and I have about 15 dumpy bags worth of stuff waiting to go here..,. The forecast says I won't be doing it for a while if I miss today. :(
  • ok today i have contacted the planning department regarding the house/land..

I have sent them the details, and have asked if planning has been applied for before.... plus what potential grey areas would there be if soneone/we were to apply for planning to renovate the existing house.

so they told me it could take a while for someone to get back to me, as it has to be allocated to one of their planning officers..

nothing in the post today about the sealed bids...

havent gone into work today, thought i would do a bit of crafting of bits to sell in the antique place, ready for easter/mother's day. but i have managed to do sweet fa:rotfl: the day has flown by...better get my butt into gear...quick before hubby comes home and seen there is nothing done:D
