We've been cut off, because neither of our vehicles could tackle the hill in its present state. There's been no post or deliveries.

It isn't much of a problem though, as we can walk to get basics if we run out. DD2 walked and caught the Exeter train early this morning, but she isn't planning to return tonight, so that's OK.

    We decided to do this:

The chap who owns the plantation lives in the village, so he cut it down and dropped it off on his way home. :)

Hi LIR - I would wear outdoor shoes & take something lighter to wear when you get indoors. It doesn't matter what your nails look like. I don't think people notice. It's good that you are being asked out & are making the effort - it's hard when it is so cold.

We have not that many friends here - it's very clique & we are just scruffs in a caravan, but kinda not bothered too much - although I do miss having someone I could really rely on - couple we knew split & another have just done the same - goodness must be that time of year methinks.
It is worth your while trying to mix socially LIR if you are there on your own alot as you may need people.
    Have a lovely time.

Dave - really lovely photo, really sharp.
We are the same - within walking distance of the wee shop/PO. Some people do panic if they can't get to the supers all the time.
I do hope it doesn't go on for months like last Winter though.

Thanks. I think the clear air was helping today. My camera's 2002 vintage and only has 3 million megawotsits, so I'd really like a new one, but there are smallholding/nursery items that take precedence.

I've probably said before that friends usually come here via the M5 and discover the last 18 miles is rather empty, so when they draw up they make comments like, "Wow, you really are out in the sticks!"

In fact, if it werent icy, we could be inside an Indian restaurant or a bistro in five minutes flat, or in the day time, we'd have a real butcher, a baker and a greengrocer to buy stuff from. So, we aren't isolated at all, just far enough out of things to be nice & quiet. :)

I hope for your sake that it isn't a repeat of last year, but it's not looking good! :(

We had a couple of inches of snow, our road is clear - it's a bus route, so does tend to get gritted. Road the new house is in looks like it could get nasty when it freezes. Build is stopped until the new year now. OH was up there this afternoon, the garden looks absolutely magical.

Think maybe he should have cleared the snow off the shed windows?

I used to live across the Loch when we first moved up to the Highlands. That was boat access or a 5 mile hike over the hill - not handy, so you just got used to keeping a store cupboard, being prepared. Last Winter started on Dec 16th & just was incredibly hard with just a couple of windows to get in & out. At one point we were wheel barrowing bales of hay scrounged from miles away - not good. We used so much feed up that we ran out.

The wee shop/PO is not too bad - milk, bread, tins - some meat etc if the deliveries are there, it's handy for when you run out. Then it's 37 miles into Ullapool which has a few shops & small Tesco.

There's a hotel 4 miles away but it's never open & is a bit dire, but they are not even gonna open for Hogmany this year. It's on the market & if they wern't asking 1.2 million quid for it it would of sold to someone who would really give the place a bit of a lift up as it's so 70's - swirly headache carpet & chintz - it's all rather sad & hopeless for the community - if that is what is here - which isn't really. They had Spainish people working in it this year - I think the Poles economy picked up & they went home. God the food is dire there - it is such a shame.

WEll your camera takes good photos.

I have thought about growing some XMas trees.

When we are paid we are going to stock up our cupboards as they are looking a bit bare. There are plenty of shops near us but they run pretty low on supplies in the bad weather and after our water pipes froze we realised it would be handy to have more things in. Plus I have run out of the basics like flour and other baking ingredients.

Davesnave, is this the emperors new clothes, am I the only one not able to see your photo? EDIT: its just appeared, must be magic :)

Rummer, thats the spirit, will start sowing in Feb, less than 2 months now :)

Bad mistake today, decided to drive out for inessentials, couldnt make it back up the hill, what a plonker! Roads as bad as I've known them.

DD2 wont make it for a couple of days, got caught by the SE snow today and I reckon it'll be a day or two before our roads are safe..ish

Good friend's do tomorrow, will make it somehow but its so icy and still worried about DW falling on half-fused knees.

Ah well, early night to recover from too much snow shovelling.

Maggie - that's a really excellent potting shed. I would love one like that.

Rummer - hope you get your supplies in. We just keep a few of those big plastic boxes filled with stuff in the shed. I buy extras when there are offers on - I would of liked to have more wood in & sheep feed but you can only do so much on a small budget.
