Congrats on the new chicken shed CTC! I loved the sign when you posted that earlier. I used to keep chickens and have been a big fan ever since - one day we will have some again but at the moment we're away a lot.
Anyway thanks very much for your offer of help. If you don't mind I'll send you a PM as I do tend to ramble and bore everyone! I'd love my own business but neither I nor any of my family or friends have ever run a business so I really have no idea where to start, and I'm one of those people who does like to know what they're doing before starting (anal, that's the word - I always read instructions!)
ye no probs pm me i will try and help, as long as you know the advice is only a guide line, so you will have to check it out to confirm it from a legal point of view...lol..Work to live= not live to work0 -
Morning all
Have been up ages -so have been in the garden and have planted out 1 of each of my 13 varieties of Indeterminate tomatoes-that leaves me 1 of each of those still indoors and all the determinate ones too -so I will attach the fleece to the canes later so I can "tuck them up" at night -just in case -then-fingers crossed, if they are ok by next weekend I will set the rest out :j -that will free up a load of space
I have been sowing lots of things this week... -still have most of my beans to do ... but will wait a little longer to do those..
My change tin gained another 103g this week :rotfl:and I have another €45 I can stash too... hubby is off to the bank tomorrow to put this months housekeeping into my savings account -so I might get him to stick that in too -failing that I will stick it in the change tin .
right off -for a cuppa and to decide what to do next!
hope everyone has a great day:D-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
Hi Mrs M :hello:
Just noticed you here on this thread.
I've been looking through your photos and spotted ones where you had a few tubs with mini-plants in and you'd put summat in the middle of the tub (ie a sort of tube-like thing). Just wondering what that is made of and what function it serves? (summat to do with watering perhaps?).0 -
Hi ceridwen
Is it the pictures inside the brassica tent thingy?
If so -they are empty pop bottles (liberated from my neighbour) -I am try growing brussels -which need to be kept in really firm ground -or the brussels don't form properly... but I didn't wan to wast a whole tub as they won't be ready until winter -so to save disturbing them I have cut the bottom off the bottles -packed compost down really hard -then taken the lid off (so it can still get water) and sunk it into the compost in the crate/tub -so the brussels are nice and firm -but I can plant other stuff like spinach, chard etc in the rest of the tub :T so far my brussels have got off to a brill start (pinkies crossed for lots of sprouts they are one of my faves)
Hope that makes sense...
I did use some empty bottles like that last year -in my tomato troughs -with a cane stuck through to keep them in place -then used that to water into-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
I'd like to buy a wood. One time we owned a caravan overlooking Delamere Forest (should have kept it!) and we went into the forest for a walk. I just loved the feel of the forest floor, all spongy and earthy smells. Since then I have thought how nice it would be to have my own.0

hey guys, can I join in???
I guess I'm somewhat there in the dream bit, small cottage, soon to be a bigger cottage courtesy of large extension. All in a very rural location in north devon. I have about a third of an acre including the bit the house is on, so rather a large garden.
I am desperate to start growing veg again, I had a bash a few years ago and haven;t been able to since due to having another baby, and a problem with the septic tank not doing its job properly!
The septic tank problem is being sorted once and for all in the next month so the new soakaway will be in my current (abandoned!) veg patch. SO I'm not quite sure what I will be able to grow this season as it depends when the soakaway is dug:rolleyes:
I am currently saving for a greenhouse, so far the fund is at £50 ish courtesy of a paypal account I forgot and £25 for opening an ING direct account. I am going to clear the loft of ALL the kids clothes which I have saved in case of a number three (my DS is 5 and DD is 2 1/2 and I still have EVERYTHING!) but I can't see that happening, but, just in case I think I might save all the cloth nappies as they are MEGA expensive to buy in bulk new. So clearing the loft, first ebay then car boot should net a fair few pennies to add to the fund.
Once I have my greenhouse all sorted then the next expense will be chickens, or rather somewhere for them to live! I like the look of the eglus but they are very expensive, can anyone here who keeps chooks recommend a decent but reasonably priced set up for a newbie?
Anyway I think I have waffled enough for now. I must sort out the piccie thing as I would love everyones input on my plans. If I post a pic of my garden as it is and then as it changes.........

Hi Mambury your place sounds wonderfull,
what size greenhouse are you aiming for? thats a fatastic item to save for, and we are all here to help:beer:
i honestly think those eglo things are a bit ott with the prices, unless they have come right down in price, but i should imagine, if you look around your local area, and farm supplies you might find something cheaper, or even look at how they are made, and make one yourself, depending on how many chickens you were thinking of having.
could even adapt a small shed, but one thing at a time......your greenhouse....that would be a brilliant adition to your garden...Work to live= not live to work0 -
Hello to tattycath & mambury. As CTC says, the more the merrier.
I'm a north Devon chap originally, Mambury. Used to live down South Molton way as a teenager. In fact my first full time job was looking after chickens in that area; thousands of them! Then, I'm afraid I went off to the bright lights and never returned. Now I can't afford to!:rotfl:0
