there are some beautifull properties down west wales, but sadly from my point of view they are being snapped up by people like yourself moving down from England. which has now bumped the prices up,
You are right, CTC, though what you describe is not confined to Wales.
I'm from Devon, (though my family tree goes to Wales) and I can't afford to buy there. Our old 3 bed Devon house is on sale at the moment with a price tag of £350k. That has only 2/3 acre and needs money spent on it, judging by the photos.
At the turn of the millennium, it was still just about feasible to buy a smallholding in Devon at 'normal' family house prices.
Things went a bit mad after that.0 -

wales, devon and scotland seems to be the 'escape to the country' hotspots..
how much did the fmily home in devon sell for originally?Work to live= not live to work0 -
We will be looking in Scotland when the time comes as my OH refuses to move very far from family and friends. That is if I can convince him to move at all! Although I have a number of years to talk him round as we want to get to grips with the growing space that we have at the moment and to build our knowledge of fruit and veg growing and house development before we take the next huge step to semi self sufficiency.
I really need do think of ways to diversify our income and expand my skills so that when we do make the big move I have a huge variety of skills to utilise. The next step for me at the moment while clearing the debt and working on the garden is to learn how to sew.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -

Yes, the TV programmes make it look so easy. I've viewed one or two that looked a lot better on TV than in reality.
We sold the Devon house for £32k in 1974, so about a 10x increase since then! The small paddock is actually across the road and down a farm track, so not ideal either.
We went into our finances this morning and then made a realistic offer on the dream property. It wasn't good enough. We could have beaten the price the other party has offered, but to put it into good shape, we'd have needed to sell off some land. Besides, there can only be one winner in a bidding war: the vendor!
Mother's side of the family is Scottish, Rummer, and I've an English cousin with a croft in Sutherland. I'd go and live up there tomorrow, given half a chance, though perhaps not as remote as that. What is it? 60miles to a decent supermarket?:eek:0 -
i phoned the estate agents, and there are two serious cash contenders, so the sale prices has been exceeded, they said if there is another serious offer put on the table, then they are going to go down the seal bid road.
my parents went to see it too, and fell in love with it, they were seriously thinking of putting their house on the market to buy it.
looks as though cash is king at the moment.
sold two gold rings to a gold dealer only for £10, scrap value, but hay its £10 in my savings pot.

I payed off some of my CC today and planted up a whole load of stuff so I feel a bit more positive. Things are going really slowly though and I just want them all paid off so that I can start my savings plan!
What is happening with all the house hunting??Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -

good one :T paying extra off the cc is brill, its all going in the right direction, have you read the payment a day thread on debt free wannabe, its brill,
i have a bal on a credit card at mo, but its 0% so while i can just keep 'tarting' jumping from card to card when the offer ends i just plod along with it...as its not costing me anything in interest.
going to have a look at topcashback as they have £85 cash back if you take out an Isa...so going to have a nose to see what is what...lol..Work to live= not live to work0 -
I dip in and out of the debt free wannabee board and I am trying hard to shift the debt. I have been moving it about but it is a long slog and I am still hoping the debt fairy will come and make it go away........
On the plus side though all the work I have been doing i the garden has stopped me going to the shops and spending money and I will soon have lots of low cost fruit and veg to enjoy!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Hello, I'm up early this morning, though not for any practical reason.
Becoming debt-free was just impossible when we had a mortgage. We'd get to a point when everything was going well, and then an unexpected expense would happen and the old CC would come out....I'm lucky that my pension lump sum cleared the mortgage just when I wanted to retire, or at least wind-down into self employment. The pension isn't quite enough to live on, hence we need to do something extra. We have a few plant sales coming up in May which will stop us dipping into the house fund for a while.
The car, which had a couple more trouble-free years left in it, has been valued at £1500, but I can buy it as scrap for £150 and keep the change! I shall then put my local garage man onto bending the rear door (it's an estate) back so we can open & close it etc etc and we may be able to carry on using it. The surplus money will be added to some insurance policy money I had, & we'll buy a newer van, because vans are dead useful when you are moving. Ours is on its last legs (wheels!)
There's very little new coming onto the market, post Easter. I'm not too concerned, as we have the plant sales to think about for the next month or two & we'll also start looking for a new rental, in Wales. It would help to be a bit closer!0
