Since when did Lidl become SO expensive?????

After running around mad for a few days at the tail end of last week I realised I still hadn't done our weekly shop. I normally shop at Tesco's as its most convenient when I'm working but in this instance I didn't want to travel far from home and so had one choice, Lidl which is almost on my door step (or Spar which I find horrendously expensive).
Now I had my list made out so I knew exactly what I wanted and it doesn't differ that much week to week. The look of sheer shock on my face at the till when I'd purchased my items in Lidl said it all, 30% more expensive than Tesco!!!!!!
........I mean I really thought the girl had made a mistake but no, I had noticed on my way round the store that a few things were more expensive but didn't think it would make that much difference!
Below is some of the price differences
sugar: Lidl 9p dearer
noodles: Lidl 1p dearer
cheese: Lidl 98p dearer
butter: Lidl 19p dearer
pork (equivalent weight): Lidl 66p dearer
cookies: Lidl 4p dearer
lasagne sheets: Lidl 76p dearer
cola: Lidl 2p dearer
orange juice: Lidl 2p dearer
milk (2L): Lidl 40p dearer
These are only a few things from my shopping to let you see. The only thing I sometimes buy from Lidl is chicken burgers. I found my last receipt (from 3 weeks ago, it was only thing I bought), and they are 50p dearer now.
What happened to Lidl being a cost effective supermarket? I won't shop there again, I told the assistant that and told her why. I'm lucky I have a car and a choice, there's lots of people that use my local Lidl's that don't drive and they're getting ripped off too.
Anyone else noticed this?

I've noticed the same with Aldi too. They used to be reasonable, but now their prices seem to match those of better quality products in the supermarkets.
I personally find that I can save money and get what I want by shopping at Asda and Morrisons.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -
It not fair on those that don't have the choice though Basmic, Lidl and Aldi market themselves as being cheap but good quality. I get the same quality if not better in Tesco for 30% less. With all of us having to watch the pennies I think Lidl's and the like are having a laugh (at us the consumer).CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. Both of them are German and source a lot if not most most of their products from Germany. I guess it is the Euro rate now kicking in.
Here in France they are cheap as ever, and my Lidl bill has even gone down now that the lower grain prices have had their effect."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -
Champys, I'm sure this is the reason. It's the same with their "cheap" electrical goods. They used to be cheap and cheerful (ignoring the PVR) but nowadays you can usually buy a branded item at a similar price elsewhere if you shop around.
Take their LCD TV's - they were very cheap once. This weeks offering is only £13 cheaper than a Samsung delivered.0 -
Lorian - from what we see, electrical goods are LOADS cheaper in the UK at the moment. This price difference goes even beyond the euro rate. The entire landscape has changed. It is telling, that for example Amazon UK refuses to send anything that is not a book or a CD to France - you are obliged to shop at Amazon France at twice the price....... very soon we'll see cheap ferry crossings the other way!"Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0

Lidl, Aldi and Netto are all taking advantage of their new found popularity.
Yes the strong Euro makes a difference but that doesn't account for many of the recent price increases.0 -

definitely, the ONLY thing I found cheaper was cauliflower. I'm not just going to visit a store just for cheaper cauliflower.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. All stores are doing it esp with the lower priced or value items. I went into my Tesco again last week and some green tea I used to pay 64p for is now 81p!What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0

I think the time of ridiculously cheap food is over.
I have just decided to stop counting our annual food budget as the price rises/changes make it hard to predict.
The way I see it I will spend what I need to to feed my family a healthy diet and this involves supermarket shopping and supporting local businesses.
We are on a tight budget so when food costs more other things have to be reduced but thats life.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

I'd agree with all the above posters. I used to shop at Netto & Aldi then top up at Tesco/Asda for what I couldn't get there. I noticed that Aldi had gone more expensive about 18months ago & put it down to the increased advertising revenue they spent (tv, full page adverts in the papers & that chef must all add up) Some of Netto's prices have doubled in the last 6 months & it's nearly as cheap to go to Asda now. I say nearly because there's sooo much more to tempt me in Asda that isn't in Netto lol!0
