    CHOCOLATE CRUNCH :o

    Prep time: 5mins – Cooking time: 30mins

    Ingredients & Quantities (makes 1 tray – 24 slices)
    • Plain Flour 425g
    • Self Raising Flour 425g
    • Sugar 375g
    • Margarine (melted) 425g
    • Eggs (beaten) 2
    • Cocoa 40g
    • Vanilla Essence Drops 0.5tsp (I would recommend either a vanilla pod or a few drops of a proper vanilla extract)
    1 tray is 26cm x 38cm x 2.5cm to yield 24 portions.

    Method

    1. In a large capacity bowl and using the paddle attachment, mix the flour, sugar and cocoa.
    2. Add the melted margarine and vanilla essence to the dry ingredients and beat in the eggs.
    3. Press the mixture, evenly into lightly greased tins.
    4. Brush the tops with water and sprinkle with some additional sugar.
    5. Oven bake at 150°C/300°F/Gas 2 for at least 30 minutes.
    6. If you require a 'crunchier' crunch then cook for longer as required. The finished result is of personal preference.

Did anyone used to sing this on the playground (sung to the tune of frer a jacques - excuse the spelling!)

    "school dinners, school dinners,
    Concrete chips, concrete chips,
    Sloppy semilina, sloppy semilina,
    I feel sick, toilet quick,
It's too late, dunnit on my plate!"

Hope that may bring a few memories flooding back. I'd forgotten about it until I saw this thread!

have just read whole thread - brought back many memories :D

my primary school was an old victorian school with old fashioned desks, it closed the year after I left and we used to sit in tables of 8 with 2 of us as servers.

I loved : chocolate sponge with chocolate custard mmm

chicken pie seved in big metal tins which we had to slice and dish out.

green chicken curry with sultanas in with rice.

most of the puddings to be honest :rotfl:

I hated : semolina and tapioca with green, red or blue sugar in the middle ugh _pale_

    grey mince with lumpy mash.

    cremated liver and onions.

also loved the big metal jugs of ice cold water and the little bottles of free school milk with a straw at first break :D

wasn't the same when they went down the cafeteria route in the early 80's, used to have chips and beans most days lol :rotfl:

Me too!! Made it yesterday. Aren't the quantities HUGE!!! I didn't use it all in the tray as there was so much and I used the extras as biscuits. Yum. Gonna make the mint custard tomorrow to go with it. The real recipe uses no eggs so looking forward to nostalgia nosh!

Anyhow, must dash. I'm off to prep a chicken now my brekkie is over (like to catch up on the tips n ideas on the OS board when I have a tea break. Saves a fortune on mags!)
