Hi Moozie - not seen this post before but the title intrigued me. I was the same as you in June 2005 but one day sat and opened all the bank and credir card letters that I had been ignoring for about 12 months and totalled my debt.

It was a transforming day in my life. Much to my horror I was still 22k in debt even though I had just sold my house to pay the Inland Revenue 14.5k.

Once I faced the debt then it was a case of tackling it and soon I shall be less than 10k in debt and moving in the right direction with not only my finances but my life.

This does sound lazy but rather than read all 19 pages of your post I would love to hear how you are doing now and the changes that you have put in place ie I have gone from being disorganised and lazy with money to the most organised and savvy with finance ! Wish I had done it years ago.

Can't wait to read your story !!
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

Congratulations again Moozie! Hope the exchange of contracts goes according to plan. keeping my fingers etc crossed for you.

I don't think it's mad at all to buy somewhere at this point. You've obviously worked it all out carefully and have spent this year proving that you can stick to a budget, (and how!) and also you are both on good (and improving!) salaries. So bl00dy well done. :T

Thank you so much Verbatim! I was a bit apprehensive when I was posting my latest update as I was concerned I'd get shot down but your post made me smile, thank you. I really appreciate your kind words!

Just thought I'd add to the update from the other day :) I got a lovely cheque from Barclays for just over £300 following my bank charges claim! :T

I will be paying it off the credit card once it clears and that will leave me with around £150 on it which should be gone by the end of November! :j

I was almost wishing I had incurred more charges so that I could pay more debt off! :rotfl: Warped thinking :p :rotfl:

I know what you mean though - I have sent my claim off this evening and as I was adding up all my charges last night I was kinda pleased when I saw another one on my statements as it was making the total claim higher!!

Well done for successfully claiming :)
  • When I applied for an IVA initially, I couldn't complete the forms completely because I couldn't open the Barclaycard envelope to find out the amount I owed them. I guess that it would be around £7000.
Then I was told that an IVA would be totally impossible because I was unable to pay enough per month, and that the best route would be to go bankrupt, to make a fresh start. I went onto the insolvency website online and began to fill it in. There came a "lightbulb moment" where I didn't care how much the statement was for. I had to complete the form, I had to know what the actual figures were. I dug out the envelopes (unopened) and started to fill in the blanks. It was like someone else was doing it, not me. I had to do it, I had to complete the form. I actually owed £9000 on my Barclaycard.

Now I have my court date it all seems so far in the past.

All this came about because I was ill. I am now unable to work, on incapacity benefit and disability living allowance. I have nowhere else to go but bankruptcy. If I could still work, it would not be a problem. There is no going back now, I just have to go forwards and upwards.

The worst part of it is facing the problem head-on.

    Good luck!

I think that so many people on this site are not only supportive but inspiring and encouraging. It warms me to see such a community formed when people are at their lowest (and highest). I know that my debt it under control because I stopped ignoring it I just wish I had known what I know now!!!

Thanks sandralovescats. I could not agree more! I hope your appointment goes well and it's all better after that. Hard decision but you have the right attitude and that is a great help! :T
