I too wish I knew more about which brands, names, designers were in. I do the charity shop thing and pick up some bits but I feel I must be missing out on something as I rearly make more than a £1 or £2.
I did get a fat face linin dress last year it was end of season and I could'nt shift it. Put it on earlier this year and sold for £13 double what I paid for it.
So if any one has any helpful hints on whats selling clothes wise then please let me know.

Its hard to describe really what sells well, you could have a look on the Ebay pulse pages and see what clothes/shoes/bags are the most watched items in their categories www.ebay.co.uk/pulse

Topshop, French Connection, Karen Millen, Coast and pretty much any designer - those are all good sellers on ebay

Designer bags are difficult though as its hard to tell if something is real and even if you know its real ebay buyers can claim its not and get their money back :(

Vintage bags are good on ebay and are usually cheap in charity shops. You can pick up cheap clutch bags in charity shops and I've sold loads of my own collection on Ebay for £10+

Nosing through fashion mags is good for picking up trends so you know what to look out for too

Hope that helps a bit :)
Not been here in years! Hi everyone. Make £10 a day challenge = £78.45/155

    Hi Triker.
Yes i understand this but just wondered if anyone had, had bad experiences where shops did nt wish to serve them anymore. Why i ask is my local charity shop is very cheap. Most expensive item is £2.00. They have lots of good clothes and top names, I am now in there nearly every day buying lots of stuff, various sizes. The ladies in there are now looking at me a bit suspiously and i know its only a matter of time before they ask why.
Should i be truthful ? All thoughts appreciated. :D

I don't think they ever will - it's none of their business, really - they are there with stuff to sell for their charity - you're buying it. If you weren't then they'd have a problem - you're the solution, and helping make their time there, and the generous donations they've received actually translate into something useful - ie cash!

I just sold the prada bag I bought in the charity shop.I was really excited and expecting loads of money for it as it had 32 watchers on ebay, but only 2 of them bid and I got £50 in the end.Still not too bad for £15 paid but I really thought this would boost my bank balance a bit more. The ones I have been buying for £2-£6 have been selling for £30 so I think I will stick to the cheaper ones in future.

re.whether or not the charity shops mind me making a profit on selling the stuff on,I have no idea but I do know that one of the shops I frequent has an assistant who jokes he is going to add zeros to anything I buy because I buy so much he says I must be selling it on ebay(actually I only sold the prada bag from that shop and everything else I still have at home)and another shop I noticed has tripled the prices of handbags since I have started buying them.I picked one up the other day just because I liked it but put it back quickly,it wasn,t a named designer and probably only cost £20 new but it was marked at £8.99!I wouldn,t pay that for a new handbag from a high street store, I would wait for the tail end of the sales instead.

Hi Agnetha, what is it about these cds that make them so valuable to someone? I'm assuming they're some sort of limited edition? Well done too, btw!
Certain artists are collectable, some aren't - I've been collecting records for 25 years so generally have a feel for what is worth bothering with and what isn't. There's probably a fair few things I've passed up on because the vinyl/CD wasn't within my realm of expertise (dance, reggae to name but two) but I stick to what I know. The main thing about these CDs are:

    1. The PJ Harvey CD was a very limited edition promo that wasn't widely available at the time and contained rare b-sides and different versions. It was released as a limited 2CD-pack with the 'To Bring You My Love' CD - this 2CD version of the album tends to go for £20+ these days; the stand alone promo that I sold is rarer.

    2. The Madge CD was a concert CD. Not technically an official item (though this was clearly stated in the listing and any fan will know that before even thinking about bidding), but this is always a blurry area as such CDs are legally pressed and available in Italy to name just one country. As it's Madonna and not a widely available release then it was always going to go for a reasonable amount.

    3. The Janet & John CDs always go for a good amount. They're definitely available for sale online on the TOGs site, not sure about in the shops so I suppose that helps.

The above are items I've got lucky on - the vast majority of stuff I pick up for, say, 20p sells for 99p. Still a profit but not enough to retire on. There's always the odd CD I get that goes for a lot more than I was expecting (I recently had a W.A.S.P. CD single that I paid 25p for go for £10.50 - I was expecting maybe £3 at the most) but generally the profits are modest. Not massively bothered really - car boots are a good excuse to have a really good shop and buy bagfuls of stuff without spending a lot. It definitely satisfies my spending needs and if I make a little money out of it too then great.
  • I'm off to the last devon car boot today, hoping the weather holds and I get some bargains. In two weeks time I'll be back to my old haunt in Surrey (I'm so excited!)

I thought, as I'm studying fashion, I'd pop on a few tips that help with buying clothes to sell on. I've only just started selling on stuff but its going really well on ebay, hope you don't think I'm being big headed (I just want to help!):o

First port of call is fashion magazines to find out whats on trend. Look is a cheap option and their fashion pages are nice and clear. I buy Elle for similar purpose and it would give you a good knowledge of high end designers though these are hard to come by at car boots. I would go for the runway editions to keep up to date with whats coming into fashion (this month's is a runway edition with an extra supplement - hermione from harry potter is the cover girl plus there is a free vest top which is quite nice!!!) You could also look at websites for free advice, think generic fashion magazines or high street stores for the best advice

At the moment, jump suits, denim jackets (stonewashed or cropped), long/boyfriend style blazers, animal print (zebra and leopard), maxi dresses, mini dresses (one shoulder or no straps) and wedges are all very fashionable at the moment, we're having an 80s throwback this year!! So they could be good things to look out for.

As for knowing what names sell, the ebay pulse thing a good bet and having a few good brand names that you know to keep a look out for. I'm definitely looking out for whistles, topshop, zara and french connection things as they are my best sellers.

Bags are a good way to go if they look "vintage". I think its about being unique and also being of reasonable quality. I haven't had success selling on primark bags because they're just so cheap in the first place. In charity shops I look for leather, branded bags that have unique clasps or details and that I can say are 'vintage style'. Topshop bags sell really well.

Things with tags go well too, or if they're unworn, I'd be prepared to pay 10-20% of the original price if it has tags.

You could also look out for what is selling out in high street stores as these things tend to go well on ebay, but I haven't tried this so not sure how you'd go about researching it and buying it up.

My golden rule is if I like it and would wear it myself its probably a goer... also it means if things don't sell you can wear/use them yourself!!:D

Hope that helps anyone who would like to dabble with clothes and accessories. My ebay stuff finishes tonight, so far a £2 topshop bag is going for over a tenner and a £1 whistles top is also going for over a tenner - made my money back plus profit so even if my other things don't sell I'm happy!

I did make a boo boo trying my hand at "antiques" though - I bought two engravings of the red arrows and the tornado plane for £1 and no one is even watching them!! I'm definitely going to stick to what I know and keep selling clothes!! :p

Have a good car boot day folks :D
