We had something similar recently, me and my husband were looking at some DVDs on a stall, we both had one in our hand when I asked the price, '£5 or 2 for £8' We both but them down extremely quickly and at exactly the same time :rotfl:

Just remembered, on Sunday, me and my sister were looking on a stall when I saw a Trivial Pursuit Star Wars Edition. I asked the price, expecting it to be about a pound. £10 she said . She asked me if I wanted to look inside the box and I said in a very shrill voice, 'NO!' and quickly walked away. I mean 10 POUNDS!!! I bet she took it home!

I had one at the weekend - vintage Pineapple ice bucket. I asked how much, he said "£10 - I can get £15 on Ebay for it but I can't be bothered". He might as well do just that as no one was going to give him £10 even though they do sell well on Ebay

Don't you just hate that? There was a guy selling some 1950's framed kitsch pictures the other day and he wanted £50 a piece as that's how much they were on eBay. Why on earth didn't he just list them? Needless to say they were still there at the end.

Haha, people do seem to use the "I could get X quid on ebay, but can't be bothered" line a lot, which I always find a bit bizarre- surely it isn't a massive effort to list something, especially if you've already taken the time to research it, and when it means you'll have a few million more potential customers?
Though, to be fair, I would love a pineapple ice bucket jesarose (although I'd want a proper tiki-style mini-bar first!), and those pictures sound awesome goanmad! (I think we probably have a similar taste in retro junk, love reading about all the stuff you buy!)

Did a charity shop haul yesterday, among other stuff got four pairs of cord flares (pop boutique, the ones they sell in Cult Clothing) for a quid, a psychedelic Duchamp silk tie (these cost a fortune new), the soundtrack to the awesome BBC radio Lord of the Rings, a few retro games, and some Dr Who vids (yeah, I'm a bit of a geek) for 25p each, including one signed by Peter Davison! Nice.

Yes, JonTurner, our clothing tastes are defo the same. As a massive fan of the gorgeous Jarvis Cocker I find flared cords very hard to resist .
My house (and wardrobe) are stuffed full of kitsch post-modern finds and although they may sell for loads on eBay I wouldn't part with them for the world.

It's our monthly jumble sale this afternoon, I'm sooooo excited! :j

Oh yes, Jarvis is pretty much my personal hero (I also have "Jarvis!" shouted at me by random people in passing vans, but I think that's mainly because of our shared taste in thick-rimmed NHS-y specs!)

I love a good jumble sale, though it's usually trickier to search out men's stuff among the wreckage! Good luck!

And yes, my house is full of ridiculous skag lovingly searched out from charity shops and jumbles- a quasi-ironic wasteland of dancing coke-cans, plastic robots, sixties ashtrays and Imperial typewriters.

I love cool retro stuff. My ultimate dream find would be one of those big round plastic cocoon chairs which you can sit inside from the 60s. I saw one in a vintage shop in Brighton and fell in love with it but it was £170. I live in hope with the bootsales.

We have an orange ice bucket and I've never seen one before. I'm considering putting it on ebay to see what happens although I like it a lot.

I love 60s glassware so am very jealous of the Whitefriars glass vase

  • I love this thread! I have read the entire thing last night and this morning :D

Really impressed with all your bargains.
Everything I buy is second hand and have had lots of good bargains too in the past.

I work in a charity shop and think their pricing is pretty daft, like people have said. But it is guidlines and they have no choice. If something comes in with tags, we mark it up at a 3rd of the label price. We have a huge sign in the wall in the stock room which shows 'current trends' and 'what to look out for' which is totally off the mark most of the time anyway.

Great for me :D As I can pick up all the good stuff before we price it up!

It's always the stuff you think would never sell in a million years that fly off the shelf soon.

And as mentioned before, if the workers are larger than you then can pick up all the nicer little sized items. Which is why I love being the smallest person in my shop!! :T

Excellent thread, am throughly looking forward to keeping posted.

Off to work out... let's see what we can see today! :j

Oh and, if you're looking for something in particular it's always worth asking in charity shops. We have rails upon rails of shoes hats bags and clothing we just don't put out sometimes. And wedding dresses etc we don't put out but sometimes keep upstairs.

Very disappointed to discover that the jumble sale wasn't on when we got there this afternoon. Men's stuff is quite hard to come by as you guys hold onto most things till they drop apart but this one often has ace finds like vintage bri-nylon socks, duffle coats and Tootal dressing gowns.

Don't get me started on 1960's glass - I've collected it for years and absolutely love it. Can't understand anyone selling it on eBay. We've got so much post-modern carp that our kitchen shelf collapsed in the night smashing my huge collection of turquoise pottery jugs and all the glass bottles (what a mess!). :(

I got a lovely 60s moss green vase for £3 a few weeks ago - its worth £30/40 but I'm keeping it.
On the look out for more now

I bet that scared the life out of you goanmad! I would think the house was being burgled and run downstairs with my baseball bat (which I keep next to my bed, just in case) :)
