Lets not turn this into a debate about whether people should make money on things from charity shops or whether charity shops spend too much money on things etc etc etc. I get so fed up on these type of arguments on MSE and this is my favourite thread so please don't spoil it. If someone doesn't like the thread or the spirit of the thread then don't read it or don't bother moaning about it. Haven't you got anything better to do with your time?
As someone who has worked in charity shops, this is my view. With the amount of stock coming in it is difficult to price everything correctly. The aim of a charity shop should always be to take stock in and get it out through the door sold as quick as possible. Now if you buy an item for £1 but it's actually worth £20, then it's yours to do what you want with it. At the end of the day that's £1 in the till. It may be worth £20 but how long will it take to sell at that price? There's no guarantee that you will sell it. If a shop sells 200 items a day for £1 that's £200 in the till - that will cover rent, rates etc. The goods may be worth more but if they were priced higher then maybe the daily takings would fall to £10 hence not covering any costs.0 -
We got up early this morning to drive to a boot sale (1 hours drive) only to find it wasn't on , so we went into town and waited for the charity shops to open, wee picked up..
2 pairs of John Rocha winter boots for my little girl (really lucky they were her size) 1.50 a pair.
Guess Who for my daughter complete for 1.00.
A vintage (well 80's) keeper toy for 1.00 (worth 5-8.00 on ebay)
And a few bits of childrens clothes including Fat Face and Roxy trousers for 1.00 each.
And we had a lovely morning out even though the kids were not impressed at getting up so early0 -

I run a chain of them and partially agree - I think the shops should get as much as they can for an item BUT if they sell it at a price which is too low then good for the buyer, well done them for getting a bargain. Charities should train their staff better. I have a view from both sides of the fence, I love a bargain as much as everyone else but my staff (mostly) know their stuff. Its my job to make the most profit from the donations, but its my hobby to get bargains in other charity shops. At mine I pay more than the price tag so there is no question of price reductions for staff, we don't do that at allNot been here in years! Hi everyone. Make £10 a day challenge = £78.45/1550 -
So I tested out Alwyn Road in Rugby today and it was surprisingly a good sized boot, I got a denim jacket, topshop, £1.50 with a pair of earrings in the pocket! They're broken but fixable and will be perfect once I've sterilized them!
Went over to table top sale which was pretty small and not as jumbly as I'd hoped. I did get an indian silk head scalf in red and white (its so pretty) for 20p and 3 broaches for £1.50 though I gave the old dears £2.
Off to one called croft tomorrow am, early (should be asleep already as up at 6am!!!) hopefully it'll be a biggun

I cannot touch velvet it makes me go all funny, I have some strange aversion to touching it. But it will be very "in" come Autumn - good buy for the coming season
Our local boot was HUGE this morning but I didn't buy loads. Just a few goodies:
best buy - Phillips Ipod docking station £10. Its only been used a couple of times and they are currently selling in Argos for £38.99 (was £58.69 a few weeks ago and I nearly bought one then). The sound quality is excellent and its really loud so will help out at our wedding next year when our hired band have breaks from enteraining everyone
