We didn't send our list out. We waiting for those who asked if we had one. We didn't want anyone to feel obligated, we wanted them to be there, present or not! Some had to travel to get to us so that would have cost them lots on top.
Our list was from Argos and most were in the up to £30 mark. I figured if some really wanted to spend more, they could get more bits!
However I only discovered MSE after marriage and wish I had put down:-
slow cooker (love mine - bought a few years ago)
hand blender (only bought a couple of months ago but great for soups) with mini chopper - less washing up than the food processor
plain white dinner service - still planning to get that one...
A plain white dinner service? Asda hun - its under a fiver! I bought two and I need another one (the kids keep pinching my plates and bowls!0 -
I am (thankfully) divorced, but when i married my ex husband we asked for nothing and gratefully received any gifts we were fortunate enough to receive. However, a few wealthier members gave money and we purchased 2 large pieces of furniture...one piece was purchased with his families gift money and one piece from my families, so when we split up we each had the piece of furniture that our families had given us in gift money.Grocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

Wow, thanks for the responses people! There's loads of great ideas on here - some little things I wouldn't have thought of but now I've seen them I've thought - how useful would that be!!
Interesting thoughts on whether to have a gift list or not. I do feel a little uncomfortable having one in that it seems a wee bit greedy. However, when I've been to a wedding I've always wanted to buy a gift for 2 reasons;
1) I want to celebrate them starting their life together
2) If I went to their house for dinner I wouldn't turn up without a bottle of wine so why would I go to a wedding where the host is probably spending £70 upwards a head without a gift!
We're probably going to have the list with a Wedding gift list company - we had a good look at John Lewis and I felt I could buy their white expensive china a lot cheaper at Ikea -we really would love a wedgewood set.
Mum and I have had a good think about what people are likely to spend. We're going to make sure there's lots of £10 options for more my generation. Mum thinks that her generation will be spending a certain amount so we need to make sure there are some options there too. Close family members have told us their budget and we will have a day shopping with them for the item they'd like to buy us. (grandparents; canteen, MiL & FiL; bookcase)
Thanks again people0 -

OMG,I would never dream of attending a wedding without buying a gift, but i dont need a list of what im expected to buy,
its not the gift buying im not comfortable with(in fact being a shopaholic i love buying presents for people)I just find wedding lists a bit clinical and in some cases a tad cheeky/greedy,maybe im too old fashioned,;),I love presents to be surprises
im going to a wedding in March, ive bought gift vouchers for the happy couple, mainly because they already have a nice house together, and also so they can buy themselves what they want and enjoy shopping together, they havent asked for anything and thankfully no wedding list with Wedgwood ,kenwood chefs or garden sheds on:rotfl:Slimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.
Week 10,total weightloss is now 13.5lbs Week 11 STSweek 14(I think)..-2, total loss now 1 stone exactly
GOT TO TARGET..1/2lb under now weigh 10st 6.5(lost 1st 3.5lbs)0 -
We didn't have a wedding list, but people kept asking my mum what to buy us. As we'd lived together for years and really didn't need anything, she said "if you really want to, just give them a few quid". We ended up with enough to pay for the honeymoon, plus buy a very posh flat screen telly! I wasn't expecting anything as we only had a very tiny wedding and then a big evening party a few weeks later for the family, so it was a lovely surprise. We also got a LOT of photo frames, and truly I don't mean to be ungrateful but I just have no idea what to do with them all. I don't feel like I can give them away because they were presents, but I just don't have room to put them all out around the house. If I was going to a wedding I'd never buy anyone a photo frame for this reason - because they will no doubt end up with more than they can possibly use. My married friends said they had the same thing.
One thing I would have asked for though, if we had done a list, would have been a drill and some tools.0 -
Sent out a list with tear out pages for people to choose whatever they could afford. Anything from cheap every day tumblers right through to a vacuum cleaner.
Funny thing was on of the most handy presents was a Wedding Album we didn't ask for (SiL did the photos, niece the album).Truth always poses doubts & questions. Only lies are 100% believable, because they don't need to justify reality. - Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Labyrinth of the Spirits0 -
I've still got my Pyrex measuring jug - it's nearly 24 years old. Still have some Pyrex casseroles too, although i would echo the poster who mentioned a slow cooker - mine is a godsend!
I did have a food processor (Kenwood) on my list - my aunt and two cousins and their families bought it for me, but I did think it was important to have some low price stuff on there too!
I had major rows with my mother about a dinner service - OH was a student when we got married and we were going to be living in a tiny 1 bedroom flat - I wanted pans/dishes and bedding - Royal Doulton was not on my list!
I won - but mums mate from Sheffield insisted on buying me a sheffield tea service - the teapot and the hot water jug were appalling pourers and they were junked within 5 years!
Do you adore fish or are you likely to be hosting really posh dinner parties? If not I wouldn't think you'd need fish knives....but this forum being so large and wonderfully diverse:D:D:D doubtless someone will be along soon to argue for a set of fish knives......:jFlylady and proud of it:j0 -
Cooking - Mama, I actually agree with you that they can be a bit clinical. However, I think that depends a little bit on what you put on the list. I have in the past bought people a set of 6 plates from their dinner service that I know will be used (and I've since been fed on!) again and again and again. I've bought my party friends cocktail shakers and managed to find something fairly appropriate on each list I've seen. At weddings where there's been no list though I've found it really hard. Turned out afterwards one couple was given 33 bottles of champagne!!!! I think it also stops what ANgel Treats was talking about where you end up with 6 of the same thing.
Pyrex seems to be winning all round!
Re Fish Knives - we do a fair amount of entertaining and I do think it would be quite fun to have the appropriate cutlery. However, there's lots of other things higher up on my list of priorities!!!0 -

Love it Sausage sandwich.
And I grew up on a pig farm.
