we went to great lengths to put lots of items that were under £5 (mushroom brushes, citrus reamer , sink plunger etc) and nothing on our list was over £45 , having said that a lot of our guests didn't use our gift list because it was with JL and they assumed it would be expensive stuff .
I suppose it depends how generous your guests are and what they feel is expected . Personally nothing saddens me more than an invite to a wedding with a gift list that has nothing under £100 on it !
The best gift we had was the time and hard work given by so many family members in making our day so special , my uncle and aunt lent us their field and party marquees , my cousins prepared cooked and served all the food and drink for our 100 guests and everyone helped to clear up afterwards .
the most used thing off our gift list is the .......lemon reamer :rotfl:Started my own business and loving being my own boss

Pyrex dishes. A proper full-sized "Gripstand" mixing-bowl. Any Mason Cash pudding basins and oven-to tableware. These are the things I would have cherished had I ever had a wedding-present list.
I suppose the concept of a "bottom-drawer" went out with the Ark a long time ago now. Which is a pity.
I echo the post about wedding-present lists with heinously expensive things on it. I think it looks rather greedy and presumptuous tbh. It's the under-a-tenner items which always go fastest and it never feels the same if you club together with other people to afford the dearer ones.0 -
It's funny, if I receive a wedding invite I expect to receive a gift list too - how can I buy a gift (within my budget) if there is no gift list?
But when it came around to sending out my own invites I felt greedy just asking for Ikea gift vouchers if people wanted to contribute to our newly married life.
We had made sure that we tried to ensure that people knew we wanted them there first and foremost, not their presents. Attending a wedding if an effort and expense anyway even before you start thinking about a gift. I still felt like I was being greedy thoughWhether you think you can or you can’t, you’re probably right ~ Henry Ford0 -

No you're not the only one.
I dont agree with wedding lists IF the couple have already set up home together or are joining two homes together. You will already have what is needed and I'm afraid if I ever got married I would be asking for donations to the hospice where my dad was so wonderfully looked after.
But it really is down to the individual and I would never not buy a gift for someone else.
Good luck with your wedding plans0 -
An Actifry, couldn't do without mine.
No toast racks, we got 7 when we married 37yrs ago! I put them all in jumble sales and had to buy one last year in Dubai.

I would not be without my slow cooker and my bread maker. Both are good time saving devices that are very easy to use and clean.I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order

No, I agree with you and we did not have a list but they are so commonplace now everyone asked us what to get! So we did a small list at John Lewis for dinner service and glasses and everyone else bought us house things/ vouchers. We actually got some fab unique gifts which I am not sure we would have done had we provided a list.
And don't get me started on the jaunty poem [STRIKE]begging [/STRIKE] asking for money .........
Each to their own I guessSaving for an early retirement!0 -
The things I am still using from my 1st wedding list are Pyrex casseroles & a Pyrex measuring jug, and I also still use a Mason & Cash mixing bowl and a few linen tea towels.
For our recent wedding we had no list but when we were asked what we'd like, we opted for JL or Debenhams or ThosCook vouchers, as we had 2 houses full of stuff that got combined when we moved in together.0 -

Its not ''romantic'' but it is the best way to make sure people you love don't end up with fourteen breadmakers but no besheetsI'd rather get people something they want BUT I do hate it when there is nothing affordable on the list. If that happens I just buy them some champagne....of which noone can have too much.
Things like dinner services/cutlery should be prioritised, so that people can buy a piece/few pieces and you end up with a complete set of one rather than half of each....then people can move onto the next one.
We didn't have a list, but we didn't invite anyone to the wedding so we counted ourselves lucky with the few things people sent....a set of Ingmar Bergman dvds (from someone who I think was hoping to depress us quickly into a divorce) and a lovely blanket from my godmother, a silver bowl for a coffee table or mantel piece and my parents upholstered two sofas I already owned in fabric DH and I chose together.
ETA: if we had a list, then oven to table stuff in different sizes and styles would feature heavily. A mixer, an icecream maker (I want one so much!). REALLY good bedding, towels etc. Different sized baking tins. Storage things...freezer to oven style storage. Decent white goods....and then things like vases and blankets/throws cushions...things that aren't TOO much, but seem too much at the end of the month and make a place ''yours''. KITCHEN GLASSES...we break too many glasses....We have a canteen of cutlery and I use vintage crockery so those wouldn't have been on my list.0 -
My mum asked for vouchers for a local dept. store and bought expensive cutlery with them which she never could have afforded.
My sister took charge of out wedding list. She typed it up and put her phone no on it so people could ring and say what they were getting so no duplicates. This also meant that people could shop around for best prices although many things were from argos and not too expensive.
I put oven to table ware, towels (stated colour), slow cooker, wine glasses and other stuff as well as asking for donations towards some carpets. The best bargains are priceless!!!!!!!!!! :T :T :T0
