  • A kenwood chef, good knives, decent baking trays and casserole dishes....oh the list goes on.

We actually ended up with many many vouchers which kitted our house out with basic furniture as we had nothing having come from furnished flats. Everything else ended up being bought as cheap as possible as we really did have nothing (apart from a tv and a stereo!) We didn't want to limit people to a list and so we thought that with vouchers they could give what they were happy with/could afford.

mmm I'm not married, but trying to think what are the most important things that are in our house. I would say a couple of decent cassarole (sp?) dishes, a mixing bowl, electric whisk, some cake tins, pressure cooker and defintely a slow cooker. For a friends wedding last year she asked for B&Q vouchers as they were doing their house up, so I gave them some vouchers and then made a little cake making set up of some of those silicone cake moulds, whisk, some chocolate powder and sprinkles, an oven glove and some cookie cutters.

  • Like so many others here, we'd lived together prior to marrying and pretty much had all our small appliances and so forth. We didn't want to make a wedding list as it seemed, well, greedy! But so many relations and friends kept asking for our 'list' that we hurridly compiled one. Our list of 'would be nice' included items such as a 'small step ladder' and a new garden fork! We'd noted that 'a cheap set of everyday crockery' would be great 'the cheaper the better!!' and were amazed and delighted to be given quite the opposiste! Also, in the same vein, 'a set of everyday cheap cutlery' suddenly manifested as a very nice canteen of good quality stainless steel - which we've still got 17 years later. What guests really wanted as to be given was a steer on the things we didn't have, rather than hopefully choose a gift that we already had.

There were a few (very generous) people who bought gifts for us not on the list. Decorative items. Now, I'm so polite I'd never in a million years offend anyone, nor give them the slightest hint I wasn't charmed and delighted by their thoughtful presents. However, when it's something that was clearly expensive and just isn't your cup of tea at all (large, heavy, rather ugly, but big name crystal fruitbowl) when a new set of coasters would have been genuinely gratefully received....!!

Our house was furnished with wedding presents. I had a list with Argos which covered plastic spoons and fish slices to Kenwood Chef. Also we had duvet, bed linen, towels, etc from M and S so people could go to Argos or M and S.

My dinner service was a "best" everyday one. Denby. I wanted one that I would actually use instead of just look pretty. It also meant if someone wanted to buy a plate then they could. I still have it to this day.

How about good mixing bowls, bread maker, good saucepans, viners cutlery, slow cooker, toaster (you will want one!)

I am not sure about putting this on the wish list - but when my niece got engaged and moved in with her OH I put together this for her (it was composed of everything I wished I had given me but had to go out and buy!
    A bucket
A washing up bowl and drainer
    A rolling pin
    A garlic press
    Large Serving Spoons
    Biscuit cutters
    A Mixing bowl
    Whisks (one large one small)
    Kitchen Scissors
    Measuring Spoons
    CAN OPENER
    Bottle opener
    Potato Peeler
    pack of tea towels
oh and I nearly forgot - a large sieve, wooden spoons and a spatula!

I put everything small in the bucket, put the bucket in the washing up bowl and paid the local florist to gift wrap it in cellophane (they looked a bit puzzled but only charged a couple of quid!)
My niece opened it and took everything out with a strange look on her face - then got to the end and burst into tears! she said afterwards it was her best gift!

A set of steak knives - mind you they are now fairly blunt as they are useful as everyday knives!

Please ensure you put items that are reasonably priced, we well as a few expensive items - I've been looking at my cousin's list recently and a lot of things are really expensive. It's going to be difficult finding something that actually fits our budget, unless we buy (for example) three wine glasses, not the 6 as requested

Am i the only person the doesnt agree with wedding gift lists?..I got one once(in the same envelope as the evening invitation)I was shocked to see things like kenwood, chef, silver cutlery and even a garden shed on it,seemed a bit greedy to me,hopefully there not all like this tho.

We didn't send our list out. We waiting for those who asked if we had one. We didn't want anyone to feel obligated, we wanted them to be there, present or not! Some had to travel to get to us so that would have cost them lots on top.

Our list was from Argos and most were in the up to £30 mark. I figured if some really wanted to spend more, they could get more bits!

However I only discovered MSE after marriage and wish I had put down:-

slow cooker (love mine - bought a few years ago)

hand blender (only bought a couple of months ago but great for soups) with mini chopper - less washing up than the food processor

plain white dinner service - still planning to get that one...
working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?
