  • Good saucepans, good knives, towels, linens. Itemise them separately to allow for every budget. Congratulations!
:D Skint but happy with my lovely family :D

    Hypnotherapy rocks :j
  • we didnt have a gift list as I wanted people to just come to our wedding and not feel that they had to buy something;)
We asked for donations to National Autism Society instead.
Some people still got us John Lewis vouchers anyway:o

Am i the only person the doesnt agree with wedding gift lists?..I got one once(in the same envelope as the evening invitation)I was shocked to see things like kenwood, chef, silver cutlery and even a garden shed on it,seemed a bit greedy to me,hopefully there not all like this tho.

i couldn't agree more, i hated writing mine. we only had i think 14 to our wedding ( had a big family bbq two days later at home) and i wasn't expecting pressies at all. but all the family wanted to buy something and all said they would prefer to know they were buying things we wanted. so i wrote one with hubby, everythign from argos and i kept it all under £20 an item. i only wrote about 8 things down. but alot used their heads and knew i loved cooking so any cookware was appreciated. i never would send the list out in a invite. i would wait to be asked if i had one.

recently at a wedding the wedding list was an online one. i couldn't afforad anything on it.one item was a photo album at £145 !! thought that was a bit much.
  • my "posh" dinner service came from argos and was bought for us by work (its the white china with the gold rim) we have the full set and we use it on special occasions.

if I had a wedding list when I got married i would have asked for:

    slow cooker
    decent knives
    decent saucepans and oven ware
food processor but I would have one of those big fancy machines with the dough hook and balloon whisk.

I'm a veteran wedding guest and believe me I give a big sigh of relief when I see they've got the John Lewis gift list.

Takes just a few minutes to log on, browse the list and pick something out. I normally try and pick something I would like or would give or something (eg. my cousin had a lava lamp on his list and I love lava lamps!)

I know it seems really soul-less but when you've got 5 wedding related events in 6 weeks (thank you, Summer of 2006 that was fun one) you are really really thankful that you don't have to rush into town after work trying to remember if their bathroom scheme is blue or purple or if your friend would prefer a pizza plate or a caserole dish.

And put stuff on at all price levels, I know my parents like to give big to my cousins on their wedding days so it is nice to have the opportunity for folks to be generous if they like.

Anyway, back to the subject - I'm not married but I've just moved into a new home and am relishing the opportunity for entertaining and I think I would put things down which aren't essential but which make having people over much nicer such as:

Tea set - milk jug, sugar bowl etc
    Salad bowl and servers
    Gravy boat
    Oven to tableware
    Cake stand

These are all things which I've been asking for as Christmas and Birthday presents as I can't justify buying them out of my budget at the moment but which I would really like to have.
I've got my own flat :j:j

Now I have to pay the bills

And feed my interiors addiction ;)

If I received a present list I would feel quite put out that someone was presuming I'd buy them something. It just seems so rude. I never expect anything from anyone.
  • We sent our list out because people kept asking for it - no one was obligated to buy anything, and we had put lots of small things on there (£3-5 items for those who just wanted a token something on the table). Funnily enough, someone called to complain that we had put all the cheap bits on, whereas he wanted to know if he could get us a gift set instead (it worked out £5 more expensive that way). We had individual towels, kitchen bits, etc.

Then the entire site crashed two weeks before the wedding, so most people couldn't do much on it anyway. We got stacks of vouchers, which worked out brilliantly as the wedding was in December. By the time we got back from honeymoon it was nearly Xmas, so we ended up getting a stack of stuff in the sales, for half the price, so got twice as much as planned!

Best items - good heavy-based saucepans (still using them) towels (dyed them twice so far to redecorate the bathroom) good knives and decent chopping boards.

    Best wishes on the nuptials!
Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

My cousin asked for money towards a mortgage deposit they're saving instead of gifts for his home?! I felt this was a bit soulless (my £20 merged in with everyone elses to become part of a deposit) so I gave them a £20 Ask voucher and wrote a small letter saying that with all their saving I thought they deserved to treat themselves. Felt much happier that way!

As already mentioned for me a wedding list is about the things you'd LIKE but can't justify. I know I'll live with my boyfriend before we marry but we'll probably have a kitchen full of odds and sods from my student house and his parent's garage rather than buying all new when we first move in (we can't afford it more than anything else). I imagine our guest list would have tefal pans (instead of Ikea basic range), nice casserole dishes, a proper dinner set (rather than a special offer Sainsburys set) and the bits you always forget you need like gravy boats and milk jugs :)

We won't have a carafe on it though which is what I bought for my friend and her husband's big day!! I had to google what it was; a posh jug for wine!! It doesn't get a chance to linger in jugs in my house!

And a cake stand. I really want one but I can't justify buying it. So that would be on my list!

i got married 5 years ago and the things i wish i'd added were my slow cooker and a good food processor/stand mixer i ahve acually bought myself both these in the last year or 2 and i use both daily

if you pick silverware ect remeber the smaller things liek pie server ect, i picked a lovely stellar set and forgot the pie server and carving set and they were quite expensive to make up, same goes for gravy boat ect to match your dinner set

and i def 2nd good towels and bedding altho some of ours are getting abit done now the dearer ones have lasted well

  • A good quality salt & pepper mill. Can't live with out mine!

2nd that about Pyrex dishes, especially as lids can be used in their own rights.
A smile costs little but creates much :)
