i used to work for the public sector before being outsourced, now dept costing 1 million a year extra to run, standards falling, now only half of us left, people leave dont get replaced but service is costing more. Private companies are in it for profit, just look at the rail service the mess that is in.

the fact that the the railways are now privatised just means we moan about them in a different way "fat cats blah blah fat cats blah blah". it doesn't make british rail's tenure any better. the railways were just as rubbish back then as well.

I'm surprised that the PS staff with 15+ years to go to retirement believe they will receive the pension as advertised today.

The country won't be able to afford it...at least it won't unless Labour print up hundreds of billions of pounds of funny money.

    Oh....

I have to declare an interest in this debate - I'm a teacher and I agree with you that teachers' pension provision will probably look very different by the time I retire in 25 years.

There was a major reform a few years ago and entrants to the profession after that date will be receiving a less favourable pension. From a self-interested point of view, I hope that future pension reforms (read "cuts") will not affect those, like, me, with prior pensionable service.

This is a hope rather than a conviction, however, and my plans for retirement take into account the possibility that my teacher's pension might not be as good as it looks at the moment.
My Debt Free Diary I owe:

    Aug 16 £19519 Dec 16 £17708
    Sep 16 £18780 Jan 17 £17082
    Oct 16 £17873

Hey I have a great idea, get a job in the public sector instead of whinging

A senior environmental manager in a manufacturing company earns £30-50k. Richmond Council are currently recruiting an environmental manager at £127K. Distortions like this are bad for the economy.

(edit: In the case of a chemical manufacturing site, the industrial environmental manager has a more formidable job that his/her counterpart in local government and would also be required to fulfill the role of safety manager as well)

A pensions liability of £650billion represents a huge tax burden for which the tax payer sees nothing in return. The bigger it gets, the more it undermines the economy. It kills investment and stimulates a brain drain.

Your reaction to the problem is: 'come and join us on the hand cart'. Hmmm.... because I express concern about a pimp's income does not imply I want to work as a pimp myself. You should also recognise that public sector reforms (salaries, employment levels and pensions) are inevitable no matter how much you might kick and scream. The kitty is shrinking rapidly as debts unwind. The government will have no alternative but to shift millions of people back into productive employment if it wants to stave off economic ruin.

To be fair though, looking after the environmental stuff for the whole of Richmond might be a bit more challenging than some private business with a warehouse.
