Oddly, despite this cut-throat competition, Travelodge (not singling them out, just happen to have the information handy) managed to pay their Chief Exec £400k in 2007.

Funny how "supply and demand" means minimum wage at the bottom, but higher wages than any council chief exec by a factor of about two at the top...

I think most people would agree that many CEOs are ludicrously overpaid - however that doesn't apply to the vast majority - many of who do good jobs on minimum pay.

    Totally, absolutely, 100% agree.

I've saved really, really hard for my pension over the last 20 years and seen it blown away by this idiot government.

I can't afford to retire because I'm expected to contribute to the lavish pensions provided to our public servants and now support the profligate bankers.

FWIW I'm someone who's worked very hard in the manufacturing sector that has been ignored by Government for decades in favour of public sector expansion and sycophancy towards the great financial service sector. Fat lot of good that's done.

You did well to survive the Thatcher onslaught :T

Why don't private sector workers fight for better conditions like pensions instead of envious whinging, oh I forgot we had Thatcher for 10 years dismantling the rights of the workforce  We were promised that with the unions destroyed everybody would be better off and the UK would be the envy of the world. OH YES :D

Basically if many of us procured guaranteed pensions then our companies would be bankrupted.

I'm forced by Gov't to pay a minimum of £5.72/hr and expected to compete with cheap Chinese imports. Other costs therefore have to be stripped to a minimum to stay anywhere near competitive. Quite frankly there's little incentive to stay in business to support the bloated Govt bureacracy.

Unfortunately we don't have open ended taxpayer support.

Many small businesses are deciding enough is enough.
  • i used to work for the public sector before being outsourced, now dept costing 1 million a year extra to run, standards falling, now only half of us left, people leave dont get replaced but service is costing more. Private companies are in it for profit, just look at the rail service the mess that is in.
Mortgage Start jun 2007 £88500 Outstanding Balance £51000
    Overpayments 2007 Nil 2008 £1040 2009 £7853 2010 £10000 2011 aiming for £18000 (6k so far)
The Early Bird Gets the Worm, but the Second Mouse Gets the Cheese!!
  • Perhaps we need to fatten the public sector a little for example one area was road repairs that were put on hold due to high oil / bitumin costs. Now is a good time to repair - funds permitting.

We'll be alright once this wealth trickles down through the classes.

That is what you get for cheering on the demise of the communist system :D

How do you know that that it is costing an extra £1million a year to run? Presumably they haven't doubled your pay so there will be a huge wage cost saving.

Presumably the powers that be put work out to tender and the quotes recived were less than they could run it for - or why did they outsource?? Just another brainless public sector decision ???
