  • I have a fantastic lady that comes to SW London from SE4, 7.50 an hour direct - she charges the same through her agency so prefers to work direct...

Slightly off tangent but I think I should go back to being a house cleaner, I work for the NHS as a health care assistant and I get paid £7.48 ph for that I have to do 12 hr shifts and work nights, admitedly I do get extra for them but thats going to change soon. Seems to me that people value having a clean house far more than their health and who looks after them, by the way I live in South East London.

Consider the total of your NHS benefits, pension and the others before leaving, you may also get paid holidays.

I used to work for a cleaning agency years ago that charged £11 an hour and paid me about half of that, in the end I left, contacted all of the nice clients and did it direct for £7 a hour so everyone was happy.

I eventually cut down on the amount of houses I did as I had one lady who wanted me to do extra things like ironing and childcare so in the end I only worked for the one person and I only packed it in when I fell pregnant.

Almost every cleaner I came across at the agency were terrible and never did a proper job and every person I took on privatley had had bad experiences with private cleaners, so if you have a good one hang on to her!

Im actually considering starting a cleaning business now my daughter is a little older but have a long way to go with it yet.

  • This might seem like a daft question; but what jobs does a cleaner do?

Do they do certain rooms, or a bit in each room. Or just whats asked of them?
I like the idea of a cleaner, but somehow think Id end up being embarrassed by the mess of my house and tidying up before they came! :rotfl:
    Am I alone on this?

Have recently gone back to work full time, and never realised how hard it is to try n keep up with it all!

A cleaner is not a tidier upper, if the place is generally tidy it's easier for it to be cleaned properly, we had a cleaner for many years but she retired a couple of years ago, we did find another but she emigrated. Just found a good company who charge by the clean rather than by the hour and it's good value for us.

OH and I have a cleaner as we both work full time and don't want to spend what little free time we have on housework.

They don't tidy up for you. We put everything away and keep the place neat. If you leave junk everywhere it would probably get cleaned around.

Our cleaner does a general clean, so: dust, window/mirrors wipe, hoover, clean bathroom, clean kitchen.

It's equivalent to a 'quick clean' yourself. So for instance, she doesn't usually take books of bookshelves and dust behind them.

That's what's normally included as standard, you can pay extra for washing up, ironing, thorough spring clean, etc.

my cleaner comes once a week for 2 hours and she asks for £6 per hour, in the two hours and i dont know how she does it she hoovers, dusts, puts away things, wipes down, mops and cleans the whole house from top to bottom.
we have a 3 storey 4 bed house and i must admit i have never seen my house so clean and tidy.
i am in plymouth ans i must say i always tidy my house before she comes and hubby thinks its great that i clean tidy before she arrives.
    she is brilliant
