£11 is the going rate where I live (N Yorkshire). If someone is coming to do 3 hours work, its not unreasonable - £33 for 3 hours hard work, plus they have to transport themselves to and from your house. You get what you pay for - if you want someone bright, reliable and trustworthy, you can't expect to pay them peanuts. They need to have the brains not to gossip in the the pub that you have gone on holiday, or what you have in your house. (I've heard cleaners doing this.) I am a graduate, and have been a domestic cleaner on and off (with other jobs) for 15 years. I have also hired cleaners, and good ones are like gold dust. If you get someone good, they can do other things for you as well. Good luck.

Slightly off tangent but I think I should go back to being a house cleaner, I work for the NHS as a health care assistant and I get paid £7.48 ph for that I have to do 12 hr shifts and work nights, admitedly I do get extra for them but thats going to change soon. Seems to me that people value having a clean house far more than their health and who looks after them, by the way I live in South East London.

In South Yorkshire, I pay £7.50 ph. This is for cleaning & ironing & I pay direct to her. I'm sure she doesn't pay tax & NI on this so it's good money in my book. I appreciate what she does for us though & think it's fair pay.

I did try through an agency who charged £11ph and this was 3 years ago. They came once & then let me down by not turning up - that was the end of them!

Don't forget too that a self employed cleaner who is legitimate (ie. not cash in hand) has to cover themselves for not getting any sick pay or holiday pay. People who are generous enough to consider paying their cleaner some holiday pay are rarer than hen's teeth!

The poster said that her cleaner is aged 17 yrs - the minimum wage for 16 - 17 yr olds is £3.53 per hour, so on that basis £10 for two hours is well above minimum wage!
