Rosieben, this is interesting to read, because I use both recycled and cheapie toilet paper, and my loo gets blocked a lot! I have been wondering whether it was the paper, rather than the "products"!

I have put down caustic soda and tried every possible horrid chemical there, thinking I might have a blockage somewhere but nothing really works in the long term!

Which toilet roll does not do this? Thanks for advice!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

IMO it's the expensive, thicker paper that is more likely to cause a blockage - especially if you have 2 boys like mine who like to use reams of paper each time they answer the call - which is why I use the cheapo own brand (usually Asda). The stuff I get seems to dissolve quickly enough - so far, no problems (fingers crossed!)

I also use it to wipe a little squirt cleaner around the seat as necessary during the day. Otherwise bung a little flat cola down the pan every night which seems to remove limescale very well. For other marks its gloves on and into the pan with toilet paper and squirt cleaner. Can't abide bleach, sets my asthma off something chronic - my mum had a 'thing' about cleaning and would use bleach everywhere - I had to beat a hasty retreat until the bleach fumes dissipated. Consequently I refuse to have it anywhere in the house. Hot soapy water is just as good.
SMILE....they will wonder what you are up to...........;)

i use a spray on the loo, then loo paper to wipe it over i do this once a day although can do it 3 or 4 maybe more times a day. as my little 3 yr old boy is still learning to aim down the loo.but it nice to know it is clean. i have a blue loo thingy in there also as i like the colour water, lol.

as for loo paper i have used andrex for ages, but now my 3yr old is out of nappies i've started buying the value stuff as he is quite genrous with the paper and the andrex was always blocking the loo.

I always use andrex and its been fine crossfingers.gif

I used to live on the side of a steep hill and one of the neighbours way below us was forever getting sewage up in her bathroom  I was specially careful not to add to the existing problem caused I suspect by too many houses on one outlet. I did some 'trials' and andrex came out way ahead. Some of the recycled and cheap ones didnt seem to break down at all; although tesco/sainsburys own brand weren't too bad I still prefer andrex. I wouldn't use quilted or thicker ones, I think they're unnecessarily thick.

When I say 'trials' btw, I actually wet some of the clean paper in the hand basin :D to see how it would break up. I obviously havent tried all cheap or recycled brands so is worth checking out a brand to see how it reacts when wet. ;)

And I would never throw tissues down the toilet (not that I use them often) because tissue is designed to not break up when wet! ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

I use blue microfibre cloths purely for toilet cleaning - blue rhymes with loo:jwhich makes me remember:rotfl:

I have a spray bottle with bleach and water in it which i use for toilets - wipe the lid, seat and then rim and outer surface and pipes and floor (7 yr old with poor aim means i need to do this a lot!!), then i spray and clean inside the bowl and under the rim.

I then squirt some chepie toilet cleaner around and i am done.

The toilets are cleaned at least twice a week with this method but also get wiped over with baby wipes or loo roll as required.
It's not paranoia if they really are after you.

try painting a blob of nail varnish at the back of the bowl for your little boy to use as a "target".
used to work a treat my with son, but the trouble was he was always in there for target practice.....lol

We live in hideous hard water area and get an irritating little limescale rim round where the water level goes. I use (very expensive) harpic type products on it and scrub like anything with a loo brush, and that works. But I was always told that putting bleach down the loo just whitened the nasty lime deposits but didn't get rid of them - is that true ? Using bleach would be much cheaper but I've never done it as I was told it was ineffective against limescale.
I think this thread is a good example of why this forum is so good - where else would we be able to discuss this topic in such detail and no discomfort ? Good for MSE/OS I say !

For really bad limescale, you can either try vinegar or scrub it with pumice stone (get a crumbly one which will break down and can be flushed down the loo).

My preferred method is to put some soap flakes in a bowl, add a few drops of tea tree oil and top up with hot water, then use a cloth to clean the loo inside and out right down to the bendy bit at the bottom. Unfortunately in this house I haven't been able to do that because the porcelain coating has come off in places making it difficult to clean with the cloth. I had to resort to a different method as I could smell the loo, and I have an obsession with smelly loos!

What I do now is use the bought loo wipes and wipe handle, lid and seat, outside, the the top bit of the loo and under the rim, then squirt bleach down. I do this every night when I'm on my way to bed. I also clean the sink at the same time using ecover spray.

    Loo brushes :eek::eek:_pale__pale__pale_
