No, XP is still around because it is a strong, stable and secure operating system

XP is still around because most computers that were sold came with it pre-installed, and its users disliked Vista so much they either put off buying a new computer, purchased one with downgrade rights, or switched to a different operating system entirely.

I loved XP and then went over to Vista when my PC died. It took me some time to get used to and now its okay. I find the aero thingy a complete waste of time and whereas on XP you could go into the system and try to sort problems, with Vista its not so easy unless you are a real techie wizzo - its obvious that Microsoft have deliberately made this sort of access difficult for the layman. I also miss the Help & Tutorials on XP - it was much more user friendly.

The only reason its still around is because of the netbook industry, M$ tried getting rid of it twice and had to postpone it twice, mainly because the "cancer" (steve ballmers words) that is linux gained a foot hold in mainstream computing because of a hole left because vista is a power hungry resourse hog and is not scalable to less powerful hardware.

Dell have been supplying Linux based systems for the last 3 years, as have many local computer shops in order to keep the cost of the machine down.
You make a choice as a consumer as to which O/S you choose, as do the manufacturers who make the kit....get off the bandwagon Marty, this anti-Microsoft speak is so 10 years ago.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Because Linux kept the cost of the net book down....until people realised how "useless" Linux is now people want net books with a proper O/S like Microsoft.

I don't have a problem with Vista, it seems fine to me.
However i'd never had a computer, or even used one till i got this, a little over a year ago, so i have nothing to compare it to.

You go into a store, close your eyes and point at a computer, what's it going to have installed on it?

Let's not pretend consumers make objective decisions regarding which OS to use; most have only ever used Windows, and are more concerned about what brand the machine is than which brand of OS is on it.

Microsoft screwed up royally, and they're going to be charging you to fix it. I seem to recall that Microsoft were peddling a similar line to you; that Vista not doing so well just showed how good XP was. The problem is that it's nonsense. Vista failed on its own merits.

Really??? If thats so how come linux netbooks run faster? Is that because you don't have to run security software in the back ground because windoze is badly writen?? Yes. Is it because it does everything that windozze can do and more for free?? Yes.
