I noticed the Quorn Mince and Quorn Chicken Pieces on sale for £1 at Asda today. I think it said that it would be at those prices until March 9.0

Has anyone been able to source Quorn or Tivall beef pieces in Surrey? Nothing in stock anywhere near me, and it's driving me mad.
Have they stopped making it?0 -
Am a vegetarian and have tried quorn a total of 3 times, on the first occasion because I was in a rush and ate whatever was put in front of me and spent the next 6 hours being violently sick until there was nothing but bile left. Rechallenged myself twice since then (once by accident) at intervals exceeding 3 years and regretted it on both occasions - what goes down comes back up within 1/2 hr and doesn't stop until I pass out on the bathroom floor. I call it "S'notwen Law".Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

OMG, Why even post that? are you trying to seek attention? seriously, all the OP did was state a running (and good) offer, so you thought you would come along and add your opinion....why post that??
Unnecessary!
And just for your own piece of mind (not that I think you care) I buy quorn as I like the taste. Its one of my favorite foods and at its normal price it costs too much for me to have more than once in a blue moon.
I think, if you consider what you wrote here, you've answered your own question: Quorn is expensive, a nonsense and potentially (and for one poster here, definitely) just as unhealthy as meat that's been badly prepared, stored or cooked.
You will SAVE MONEY and have a NICER and HEALTHIER meal if you eat a real vegetarian meal. Meat IS an expensive item, especially quality meat.
My opinion (and that of informed nutritionists) is that meat is a necessary part of the human diet. Again, on the money saving front i prefer to have a small amount of good quality meat rather than large amounts of cheap low-quality meat. This is still a money saving issue - purchasing artifical substitute meat is money wasted. You said yourself it's too expensive, so why bother?
Clear now?Under no circumstances may any part of my postings be used, quoted, repeated, transferred or published by any third party in ANY medium outside of this website without express written permission. Thank you.0 -

What's "quality meat"? How could a vegetarian ever make a distinction btwn different meats? It's all parasite ridden tissue whether its expensive or not.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

James, what are you saying is missing from a veggie diet?! It can contain everything we need, we lack nothing! Plus it's lower in cholesterol than eating meat.
I really don't see why you are arguing in a Quorn thread, you are hardly likely to have any effect on what vegetarians eat or do, keep bleating on about meat!0 -

No, we are not clear! My question to you was, why post this? what were you hoping to do? was your point to post to others such offers? let them decide if it was good/bad? or (and what appears to be so) to control or make peoples choices for them? what happened to the right to think, choose and eat what the hell we wanted? who are you to decide what we buy and eat? why do you feel you need to make such comments? why am I not allwed to actually like quorn? is that so hard for you to understand? am I not allowed to make my own choices? at 27 years old am I not entitled to my own mind without people like you attempting to influence my choice?
And if its such valuable money saving advice, why not start your own thread on slating, sorry, mentioning which foods you feel are bad value for money? why post here?0 -
Oooh, thanks for the heads up on this! We've just started using Quorn as OH has high chorlesterol and we're trying to cut out the meat consumption. I like veggie meals and make lots of currys and pasta etc but we so miss a good spag bol and it's true quorn actually improves the consistancy of it!
What are the quorn pieces like? I've always shyed away because I thought they might be tough. How long does it take for them to cook?
I might pick up a pack as they're so cheap, thanks againDFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0 -

Very quick, but you have to be careful how you use them - i.e. you might want to cook the Quorn before preparing your meal in some cases. You certainly wouldn't treat it as meat and leave it to cook for 40 minutes, for example. In a spag bol though it can be used the same way as regular mince.
As for it being tough, not at all. It's a little flaky, certainly doesn't have the consistency or the true taste of meat; but that said it's not like anything else you would have eaten either. It will take on the consistency and flavour of whatever you cook it with which is why it's often compared to chicken - my personal preference is often to fry it off in a little oil and put it in near the end of my cooking as I like it firm. If you prefer it soft you can put it in at the start of cooking, for a curry for example.0
