Caught speeding 106mph on motorway

  • To all of you "flog him and hang him" merchants well done. It must be fantastic to live your lives without EVER breaking the law. Not even having "just one more" and driving home ?
You do not know any of the prevailing conditions, apart from the fact he was doing over 100 mph.
Was it 2.00 am on an empty Motorway ?
Was he driving a car capable of over twice the speed he was doing ?
Is he a driver with many years experience of high power vehicles ?
You do not know any of these answers.
But then again that probably doesn't matter to you, he was speeding and should be shot.
Many on here bleat about getting caught without an MOT and how they are so hard done by.
Let's put it this way, making wild assumptions as seems to be in order -
Would I rather meet a BMW 5 series doing 106 at 2.00 a.m on a Motorway or an untested 13 year old Nova at 29 outside my child's school I know which one I'd go for.

    Give the guy a break

  • I have done over 120 on a quiet stretch of the M62 a few years back. I felt safe as i'm a good driver, it was a clear day and the road was empty. However, it's wrong to do so.

I'm still waiting for the race card to be played tho...

Im afraid youre argument makes no sense at all, and as much as emotional outbrusts by people demanding that speed kills, spoils the argument for speed limits, yours rather insults the argument against them.

As you quite rightly say, we all break the law from time to time. I myself am guilty of creeping up over the speed limit on a motorway, which is why I previously said that I would have more sympathy if he had been caught at 80 or so. The fact is though, he wasnt, he was caught at 106mph, and no matter whether he was on an empty motorway, in the middle of the night, or on a packed highway, there is absolutely no reason to be driving that fast, save a medical emergency (And even then, I still think over 100 is pushing it). Next, you seem to liken someone not having a MOT to speeding. Where on earth is the correlation. Id say it is relatively easy to forget to have an MOT done, whereas its not that difficult to realise youre going to fast, when you have the outside world flying by at warp speed 9, a rather large dial in front of you spelling it out, and an engine screaming for the next gear that aint ever gonna come. I appreciate they are both illegal, however, if I had to choose between taken a fine for having no MOT (£60 and no points), or speeding at over 100mph (Likely a ban for a few months and a hefty fine), I know which one I would choose.

The fact is that whether you agree with the speed laws or not, they are what they are, and you either abide by them, or take the bus.

Quite easy really, BOTH are illegal. Having no MOT means an "unsafe potential death machine" being on the roads. I appreciate that this is very immotive language but no more so than "Speed kills".
Yes speeding can be dangerous but let's not get all self righteous about it. The original poster was only asking for advice, not a lecture from those who have done no wrong - - Ever

If you do over a ton, then you know that you are taking a risk.
He did and got caught out.
Arguing that it's safe or not is irrelevant.
    Sorry.
  • I am not for one minute arguing that the speed he was doing was "safe". I am just pointing out that to instantly call it dangerous is simply untrue. If you take "speed kills" to it's logical conclusion then everyone taking part in Motorsport would be dead, because they "speed".
I can't wait for the next "forgot about my MOT, or Police pulled me for a bald tyre" posts, I'm sure you'll all tell these people how dangerous they are. No, thought not.

I thought Id pointed out that I agreed they were both illegal. Nevermind.

Alhtough, I think I should point out that an MOT will only ever guarantee a cars roadworthiness at the very time its in the test centre. It may well drive out and have the engine fall out of it. Therefore, it can be said that even a car with a valid MOT may not be road legal, and conversely a car with no MOT can neither be gauranteed as unroadworthy. All the MOT does is declare that a car is fit to be on the public road at one given time a year. So, "Having no MOT means an "unsafe potential death machine" being on the roads", isnt just emotive, its wrong. Plus, Ive never argued that speed kills, so I dont see how that part of your argument relates to me.

Have you mistaken this for the 'random Daily Mail headline generator' thread??? :rotfl:
  • Having no MOT means an "unsafe potential death machine" being on the roads

But having an MOT doesn't mean that the vehicle is roadworthy.

Speed doesn't kill.....Inappropriate speed, Inexperienced speed and stupidity kill.....

I am the first to hold my hands up to speeding occasionally and anyone here who says that they don't is full of it or drives a Rover Metro on Sunday afternoons only.

Speeding is an emotive subject and I think that really people need to reign it in a bit. We all have differing opinions just as we all have differing driving abilities. Nobody will ever agree and whilst 106mph in some peoples eyes is excessive, again it depends on the circumstances.....

I think everyone needs to agree to disagree on this one and just give the OP the advice he came for!!!!
