Caught speeding 106mph on motorway

  • What i'm saying is that whilst technology has improved over the last 50 years. Speed limits have on the whole reduced.
Like the trains we now travel slower than our predecessors did.
    Progress i don't think so!

So i don't disagree that reducing speed reduces the damage in a collision. Just on a fundamental level that kind of approach to risk, would cause devolution not evolution. - Not what this country was built on.

    Got ya... :D

I see where youre coming from, but as much as most cars on the road these days are much more safe and technologically sound, it must be remembered that there are still thousands, if not tens of thousands of old duffers being driven around out there, and until the very moment that we can say "Right, every single car in the world (Because there will always be foreigners coming over) now has automatic spatial awareness sensors", then we will always have to legislate to the lowest common denominator (I think i may have said that once in this thread already. if not this one, then definately another.... Am i going mad!!! :D )

The other thing about trains that you mention. Well I couldnt agree with you more, but then I guess thats a result of the very unfortunate litigious society we live in, causing an even more unfortunately necessary health and safety regime. Im not saying I agree with it, but again, until the day that Ambulance chasers are all banished from the earth (or at least to France), then the majority have to suffer because the minoirty cant look after themselves.... ;)
  • Bring back natural selection. LOL

But seriously that kind of sums up (i'm loathe to use this tabloid term) broken Britain.

We are too concerned about catering for the lowest common denominator - which is a self fulfilling prophecy - in that the more we cater for it the worse it will get.
You can see this in other aspects of our society e.g. immigration, unemployment etc etc.
  • i wont bother repeating my self, but basically my opinion is if you have people travelling at double the speed of other people, the risk of crashes will increase. Apart from the middle of the night i cant see that increasing speedlimits will speed a to b times up

On my local motorway they reduced the speed limit by 20 mph and enforced it with average speed cameras, the average time it took to get to work decreased as there was no wave affect caused by people having to brake heavy and then rear ending each other, everyone travelling at roughly the same speed during rush hour reduced accident rates by some big percentage, i read the figures some where, cant remember where thought!

    i do around 60k a year on motorways :(
  • also the number of cars on the road is a load greater than the 'good ol days'!

I hope they find the biggest book in the courtroom and launch it at him harder than a NASA rocket.

Thats just an excessive speed asking for a trip home in a wooden box , or even worse... someone else.
That's just a load of dramatic sounding tripe based on your assumption that it's very dangerous, despite no evidence regarding the conditions.
    Happy chappy

Is this a different case to the one on the news? In that one, he has got 12 weeks for texting, i.e. dangerous driving. not for killing someone.

The judge even spelt it out for the hard of thinking :

Mr Justice Wilkie said: "It's clear the dangerous driving had no causal link to the accident."

I imagine he'll get a fine, but we've all been there havent we. I got my mum's BMW upto 126 on the m11 once, absolutly cacked myself! dont think i'll do it again luckily i wasnt caught!

Not excusing my behaviour but there was very little traffic on the road, and the conditions where smooth and clear. I honestly didnt realise my speed was on auto-pilot.

Hopefully now he has learnt his lesson and wont do it again.

Alright, we dont know what the conditions were, but come on Tom, regardles of that, even YOU have got to agree that 106mph is a little excessive. Despite the fact that it is illegal, is there really any reason to drive that fast anyway, other than for a genuine emergency (Which clearly wasnt the case here, as the OP would have mentioned it). ;)
