  • There's nothing wrong with buying Dell machines, nor is there in using Windows in a safe manner.

Obviously, you only hear about the times that someone hasn't, no one comes and posts "just checking in on another day I've not let any malicious software onto my machine"

Just checking in I have no infections!

    @Billy

Its an old computer, try and get a LiveCD of linux and run that see if its hardware related or not.

If it isn't and you need to reformat and you can't use windows to back up your files you can use the LiveCD to back them up.

Have you tried using the install CD to repair the installation?

Same, on all five machines I've used today.
  • Thanks for the input
  • Bump.

Any ideas anyone, is the pc infected perhaps.

    Cut.
    Thanks for the response Marty.

Yes I did have problems last year, but luckily a run back through system restore, and changing my virus and firewall to other providers sorted it all out eventually.

This time it seems more terminal. I have been getting blue screen of death after a couple of minutes of use. I have tried using system restore in safe mode, however none of my restore points will work. I also cant use task manager as i get the error message that 'administrator has blocked my access'. After the machine has rebooted I get the stock reply that the restore point didnt work, but the pc seems to run ok. The on reboot the next day, blue screen of death again. I am just hoping that while the machine is working temporarily I can backup my last 6 months of work.

    cheers Bill
  • Tried a Linux LiveCD to get what you need off the hard drive and then formatting and freshly reinstalling again? Why bother messing around with it when you can take it out in one fell swoop?
  • Problem is its got XP as oem on the disk. Dont have the original instalation disks from Tiny.

You could post a HijackThis file to see if you've got any nasties. It doesn't matter about it being oem you can use any xp disc but with your number, the livecd wont touch the hard drive.

Bill, do you really want to go through all this again with a new computer?

I ran a virus scan on my Mac yesterday for the first time since about 2007, and it didn't have a single thing wrong with it. I only installed the anti-virus application yesterday out of curiosity. A Dell might seem like a better deal, but when you factor in the great software you get with a Mac, plus how much more secure it is than a Windows PC, it doesn't seem so hot. I know I'd rather be using my computer than trying to figure out if it has a virus or not.

That said, if you think you have an infection, download HijackThis, do a scan and post the log up here for us to have a look at.
