    I'm curious.

49% of professional movie editors in the US use Macs.

So that means 51% use either Windows or Linux.

So, unless 50% of them use Linux and 1% use Windows, or 50% use Windows and 1% use Linux, the greatest number of them use Macs.

Or have I made a mistake adding up 49 and 51?

I'm not talking editing I'm talking making. Sure they might edit the finished product on macs, they literally make the movies on linux rendering clusters at a fraction of the price, using software they make themselves. Its all over the internet read about it.

So when you said "the majority of movie studios use Linux", what you meant was "the majority of movie studios use Linux when they're not using Macs"?
  • The posts on here about PC v Mac reminds me of the joke that went around about if Microsoft made cars http://www.snopes.com/humor/jokes/autos.asp

I must admit that if I had a huge pot of money I would buy myself a mini mac for the living room, a Mac Pro as a work horse & an ever so sexy MacBook Air for a 'sitting in the garden, having a glass of wine perusing the internet' machine.

Many years ago I used to sell Apple Macs & when the first iMacs ( http://lowendmac.com/imacs/rev-a-imac-g3-233-mhz.html ) came out my Dad bought one & even after 10 years he still has it sitting by the side of his newer one as he can't bear to be parted from it :rotfl: so I guess Apples really do get under your skin.

I still find Macs easier to use (& I always have to have a separate log in as I insist on having my start button at the top of the page as it just feels right iykwim), however after getting a mortgage & having kids unfortunately Macs are to expensive for me so I have to use PCs :o which I find do crash more & are more temperamental.

Anyway enough of the Apple-loving/rambling from me :rotfl:

Mac Minis are less than £400; just buy one less crappy PC, and you can get yourself a pretty little Mac. ;)

*yawn* the majority - 95% - of movie studios use linux or irix. Linux accounts for about 80% of that 95%. Macs are thrid best here with windows presumably pulling up the rear. I wonder why pixar are forced now to use macs??? Steve maybe pulling a few strings??

So what I meant was the majority of movie studios use linux full stop unless they're forced to use something different by board members.

Mum of 3 you'd get a mid range PC for 400 quid much better specs, and that includes buying windoze if you're that way inclined.

You seem to be under the impression that using Linux means you can't use Macs too. It's not an either/or choice. Saying 80% of movie studios use Linux says nothing about how many use Macs.

Pixar presumably use Macs because then they can have one of the world's best software companies writing software and creating new technologies for them.

And because Steve told them to.

And does that "mid range PC" come with Mac OS X, audio, video, photo and web design software?

    Noooooo.

It seems thats you opinion, I've never said they dont use macs as well I'm saying they use linux moren however you have the attitude that if they're using macs they're not using linux, or that linux is some second class software when its not:
'So when you said "the majority of movie studios use Linux", what you meant was "the majority of movie studios use Linux when they're not using Macs"?'

The fact is linux can do what macs can do for cheaper, software wise and hardware wise. Thats why its used. Plus you dont have to wait for apple to supply you with the software you just write it yourself.

Now we both know PC's dont come with apples version of BSD, it will however come with much better hardware and all the audio, video, photo and web design software is free if using windows if you know where to look and comes bundled with linux.

I don't think I ever said any such thing. I used to use Linux before I got a Mac, and I would happily do so again if I ever had to use a PC.

I very much doubt Pixar pay the same price for Macs that the rest of us pay.

Whether it comes with better hardware is certainly debatable. I have certainly seen a lot more older Macs than I have PCs. Generally Mac owners don't view their Macs as disposable. And there's nothing on Windows that compares to iLife that I've ever seen.
